2023 was a shocker for the box office, not only did a video game movie become the most profitable film of last year but a movie based on a children’s toy became the biggest blockbuster. Based on Nintendo’s immensely popular Mario video game franchise, The Super Mario Bros Movie contained an incredible cast and an impressive storyline.

Starring Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy, and more, the movie went on to gross $1.36 Billion worldwide against a production budget of a meager $100 million (via The Numbers). Just a bit short of Barbie’s $1.4 billion, Mario Bros is the most profitable movie of 2023.

As per Deadline, the Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic-directed flick made over $959 million in revenue, which includes the total box office and profits from theatrical, home entertainment, television, and streaming. Meanwhile, its total expenses amount to $400 million including costs like production, prints, residuals, and the rest.

This makes the Chris Pratt-starrer film’s net profit equal to $559 million. This huge figure not only makes the animated video-game flick the most profitable film of 2023 but also one of all time!

It won’t be wrong to say that Barbie seemed more of a gamble to make. A film based on a toy like Barbie, set in a fantasy PINK-filled world, aimed to tackle issues like patriarchy, social oppression, gender stereotypes, and more, Greta Gerwig‘s movie was not supposed to be a film that many would like.

Yet, the film went on to be no less than a social phenomenon and a groundbreaking social commentary feature. The Margot Robbie-starrer movie went on to gross $1.4 billion at the box office against a production budget of $151 million (via The Numbers).

Despite being one of the highest-grossing films of all time, it was dethroned by The Super Mario Bros Movie for the Most Profitable Film of 2023 title. According to Deadline, the movie made $1009 million in revenue and its total expenses were $588 million, taking the net profits to $421 million.
