Mojang Studios’ 2011 sandbox game, Minecraft, is the highest-selling video game of all time with a whopping 300 million sales since its release. Thanks to a multi-platform release, Minecraft catered to all kinds of gamers, providing them with a fun co-op survival experience. Not even games like Tetris, PUBG, or Mario Kart could dethrone Minecraft. With 300 million copies sold, Minecraft is expected to hold this spot for a very long time as the game continues to sell copies.

Many popular video games were released in the 2010s but one game broke all records and became the highest-selling video game of all time: Minecraft. Developed by Mojang Studios, Minecraft had a simple concept and yet, it became so popular that it managed to sell 300 million copies across different platforms. In 2023, Mojang Studios revealed the staggering number during Minecraft Live 2023.
As per activeplayer.io, more than 160 million people played Minecraft in the last 30 days, between March and April. Even after roughly 15 years, the game has continued to dominate the gaming industry. Minecraft was first made public in May 2009 and was fully released on November 18, 2011. By 2014, Microsoft announced a $2.5 billion deal to buy Mojang thanks to Minecraft’s popularity.
Minecraft managed to defeat games like Tetris, GTA 5, PUBG, Mario Kart, and Red Dead Redemption 2
Minecraft has secured the crown by creating a huge gap between the rest of the contenders. As per Statista, Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 5 is the second highest-selling video game of all time with 195 million copies sold. Tetris has secured the third spot with 100 million copies while fourth and fifth places are secured by Wii Sports and PUBG: Battlegrounds respectively.
5th-10th spots include games like Mario Kart 8 / Deluxe, Red Dead Redemption 2, Super Mario Bros., Overwatch, Human: Fall Flat, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. There is no doubt that Minecraft has influenced the world and even several popular games, in fact, GameSpot has reported that a Minecraft movie is in the works.
