The Harry Potter franchise has a lot of characters with different traits. Not just the magic, these characters often fascinate fans with their behavior and how they influence other characters. Professor Snape, an uncanny character loved by all, might appear very rude to Harry but deep down he is not as he appears on the surface.
There are a few instances where Snape saved Harry Potter and the Gryffindor students. His iconic duel with Professor McGonagall in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II has one essential point that might not appear at first glance. He saved Potter and the students.
Professor Snape and Professor McGonagall Duel
Professor Severus Snape’s (Alan Rickman) characteristics were interesting. He was not easy and mostly devoid of a smile. The professor of Dark Art’s treatment of his students is often rude but his sentiments were always in favor of the students and the school. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II, Snape is forced to fight Professor McGonagall (Maggie Smith), a talented witch fully aware of her craft. But can she defeat Snape?
In the film, Harry revealed that Snape was the killer of Professor Dumbledore, for which McGonagall went after Snape and that led to the duel. Snape defended himself from the spells of the witch when the students were all present in the Great Hall. He deflected McGonagall’s spell and directed them towards the two Carrows behind him. Also, he refused to fight and left the premises so that no students get hurt.
Snape has immense power and mastery over Dark Art and he is very difficult to defeat. Certainly, McGonagall has been a unique and fascinating witch but her abilities may fall short to defeat Snape. The Potions Master at Hogwarts also possesses the ability to invent spells which makes him even more powerful. But fans were amazed by Snape’s sacrifice and his soft corner for the school.
J.K. Rowling on Killing Off Severus Snape
Despite his abuse of Harry, Severus Snape is one character loved by many. Snape loved Harry’s mother Lily Potter. He is depicted as a wizard who entails all the darkness in him. Snape died in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows- Part II which was one of the most emotional deaths in the franchise and it caused a huge uproar among fans. Responding to the death of the character, the author of the book series J.K. Rowling took to X to explain her reason behind it.
“Snape didn’t die for ‘ideals’. He died in an attempt to expiate his own guilt. He could have broken cover at any time to save himself. but he chose not to tell Voldemort that the latter was making a fatal error in targeting Harry. Snape’s silence ensured Harry’s victory.”
Later, the author apologized for killing off Snape. “OK, here it is. Please don’t start flame wars over it,” she wrote on X. “But this year I’d like to apologise for killing (whispers)… Snape. *runs for cover,*” she added. Of course, Snape was all grey, even Rowling admitted that, but his death left most fans devastated.
