The hype surrounding X-Men ’97 has reached a fever pitch. The show’s directors have fuelled the flames by hinting at a potential movie adaptation while speaking to InverseHe shared that the creators were already making movie-worthy scales and quality and would love to do something like the Spider-Verse animated movies.

“It feels like we’re already making movie-level animation and events… But just to have that budget and time then to make it a full feature, and to kind of do what Spider-Verse and the recent animated Turtles movie did…” Chase Conley to Inverse

But a crucial question lingers: can the series actually translate to the big screen? While X-Men ’97 boasts stunning 2D animation Marvel’s recent ventures into CGI haven’t exactly been met with critical acclaim. Take, for example, the lackluster visuals in She-Hulk or the overuse of it in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. These are just a few instances where the CGI felt unfinished or out of place.

Furthermore, with the recent VFX controversies plaguing Disney, can Marvel even pull off a high-quality 2D animated film in today’s landscape dominated by 3D animation? Besides the Marvel projects, other Disney movies and shows including Ahsoka and Prom Pact were far from satisfactory for the fans.

Despite the valid concerns, there are still reasons to believe an X-Men ’97 movie could be a success. The love for the 2D animation style is undeniable. The show’s popularity proves there’s a dedicated audience hungry for this format. If it can work on the series, it can perhaps work on the big screens as well.

During the interview with Inverse, the supervising director Jake Castorena expressed his desire to work on more seasons of the Disney+ show in the most human way possible. He joked about working about seven seasons of the show and a movie to ensure job security.

“Oh, I love job security,” “I think myself and the entire team would love to keep doing this. Seven seasons and a movie. Let’s go!” “If the love and the demand is there from the fandom, and Marvel wants to let us do it, it’d be great to bring these X-Men, these characters, this style, and this work to the silver screen.”

Fans can tune into Disney+ to watch X-Men ’97. The episodes are currently airing weekly and the last is set to start streaming on May 15, 2024.
