Before Netflix’s One Piece was released, the cast of Straw Hat featuring each member was interviewed by GamesRadar+, and they talked about several aspects of the adaptation. Sanji’s actor, Taz Skylar, opened up about different aspects of his character and shared advice, which he got early in the shooting process that proved helpful to him in the long run.
Netflix’s One Piece was released back on August 31. It is based on Eiichiro Oda’s best-selling manga and one of the best Shōnen series ever created, One Piece. The series delves into the first 100 chapters of the manga and covers the adventures of the Straw Hats, led by Monkey D. Luffy as captain.
What advice did Sanji’s actor in Taz Skylar Netflix’s One Piece follow from early on?
GamesRadar+ got the opportunity to sit with Taz Skylar and talk about Netflix’s One Piece. He was asked whether this live-action series would be complex for new viewers as “the manga has been going forever. The anime has been going on forever. But I feel like live-action anime or manga adaptations can be tough even for people who are usually into the things being adapted.”
He was asked how he would convince people to watch the show, to which he replied, “I just say watch it. In terms of the controversialness of it being a manga live-action and stuff like that, I like that. I don’t see that as a bad thing because I think many of the things that we hold as big turning points in our opinions of things were controversial. So, I kind of like that.”
He continues talking about a specific thing one of the directors told him very early in the process, “The only way we can get it wrong is by trying our hardest to get it right.”
“And if it’s not, at the very least, everybody was acting pure of heart. That’s my opinion on it.” Skylar believes that everyone doing the best they can equates their perspective of what a good job is.
What was Taz Skylar’s perspective on the Straw Hats Chef in One Piece, Sanji?
Taz Skykar perceived Sanji’s character as “Romantic, fierce, caring.” He also delves into explaining why he used those adverbs to describe Sanji.
“Romantic, for the obvious reasons. I think he is a romantic. He romanticizes not just other people, but he romanticizes things. He romanticizes what he does, he romanticizes the world.” He explains Sanji is fierce because “he protects both his care and his romanticizing with what is a very adamant ability to protect him and others.”
He believes Straw Hats’ chef is caring because he cares a lot, more than he expresses. According to Skykar, Sanji would “risk everything to protect the things that he cares about.”
