Ever since DC Studios’ CEO James Gunn revealed his plans to give Green Lantern a big comeback with the HBO series Lanterns, social media started getting filled with rumors and speculations surrounding the show. And over the years, Gunn has been debunking every rumor related to the show.
However, by the beginning of 2024, James Gunn finally took to his Instagram threads and noted that every rumor is fake until it comes from him. Following a comment from Sterling K. Brown, who expressed his desire to appear as Green Lantern, Gunn debunked a major John Stewart rumor on threads.
Sterling K. Brown Aspires to be Green Lantern
It’s not surprising that several actors in the entertainment industry have been striving to appear in superhero flicks like DC and Marvel, because of its popularity. Even American Fiction actor Sterling K. Brown recently expressed his aspiration to work with James Gunn in the upcoming live-action DC project Lanterns.
Still having his sights set on playing John Stewart aka Green Lantern in the HBO series, Sterling K. Brown confirmed that is interested in joining James Gunn’s DC universe, while speaking with Rotten Tomatoes, via X. Being a fan of DC since his school and college years, Brown noted that he would be legitimately excited if he finally gets to play the role.
“I watched that Justice League cartoon religiously in like high school, college right after, etc. It was dope. Seeing John Stewart, knowing that there was a black Green Lantern was something like in terms of representation, was like ‘Oh Man! There’s a space for me in this world and I see it.’ And when I looked [at the cartoon], I would think, ‘I kind of look like this dude,’”
“If it could happen, that would be legitimately exciting. That would be one of those giddy-inducing moments in life because my kids would get it, without me having to explain it to them.”

Although Sterling K. Brown expressed his desire to play Green Lantern, James Gunn is yet to address his comments and confirm casting. Meanwhile, the DC CEO is busy debunking rumors related to his upcoming show, Lanterns.
James Gunn Debunked a Major John Stewart Rumor
Fans have been eagerly waiting to see what James Gunn does differently with his upcoming HBO show Lanterns to save the mess that was last created by Ryan Reynolds. Waiting for updates about the show, netizens appear to have begun spreading rumors like wildfire. Thus, instead of focusing on casting and production, Gunn took to his Instagram threads to debunk those rumors.
Previously, James Gunn discussed and tossed away a few rumors about Green Lantern and other superhero suits, via his threads account. But on a much recent note, following Sterling K. Brown’s comments, netizens sparked rumors about John Stewart’s character and his age. Alleging that the superhero character will be in his early 20s, fans began questioning Gunn.
“Guys. If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a thousand times. Everything out there is b*llshit unless it comes from me. People don’t even know the writer on the show. How do you think they’d know they age if the character?” DC CEO noted.

Coming up with a simple response, James Gunn purposefully debunked each and every rumor surrounding Lanterns and his other upcoming projects. Although it was a major concern for fans to note if the actor playing the character would be young or experienced, Gunn slammed the rumor without revealing the age bracket.
