John Stewart is one of the most popular characters in the DC Comics. He was the first African-American superhero to have appeared in the comics. However, he is still missing from any live-action media. Even though Wayne T. Carr was roped in to play him in DCEU’s Green Lantern Corps, the unfortunate demise of the franchise did not let that happen.

As James Gunn is devising the plans for his new DCU, Sterling K. Brown has expressed his interest in playing the DC hero once again. Speaking on the Rotten Tomatoes Awards Tour (via Movieclips), the Invincible actor revealed that he has been a fan of the Black superhero since childhood. Watching the character, he felt he had a place in this universe.

“I watched that Justice League cartoon religiously in like high school, college right after etc. It was dope. Seeing John Stewart, knowing that there was a Black Lantern was something like in terms of representation wise was like ‘Oh Man! There’s a space for me in this world and I see it.'”

The Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor added that he also thought he looked like that guy. He was not shy to admit that if his dream came true, it would be “legitimately exciting” and one of his most memorable moments. John Stewart is slated to appear alongside Hal Jordan in the upcoming DCU Lanterns show. It remains to be seen if Sterling K. Brown can impress Gunn for the role.

It is not the first time Sterling K. Brown has expressed interest in playing the DC character. He posted to a tweet long ago in 2017, requesting DCEU to consider him for their Green Lantern Corps project. As the topic has been raised once again, the fans are keen to explore if he is the right choice for the role of John Stewart.

While it cannot be denied that the fans support him as John Stewart, Brown’s age of 47 is one of the factors that raised concerns. The True Detective style of the upcoming series has convinced ardent DC lovers that he can be an incredible cast. However, the rumors of the potential romance between John Stewart and Hawkgirl make his casting doubtful.

The DCU will kickstart its saga of movies with Superman: Legacy, starring David Corenswet as the titular hero. Nathan Fillion is also set to appear as Guy Gardner’s version of Green Lantern in the movie. The James Gunn directorial is set to start filming soon, from March 2024, and is targeting a release date of July 11, 2025.
