The hype for Saber Interactive’s Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 is steadily rising by the day. Fans are eager to jump back into the classic violent Warhammer action and dystopian universe. As we head into launch, though, there were some concerns around solo play.
Specifically, some fans worried that Saber focused entirely on co-op multiplayer, potentially leaving solo players out in the cold. Thankfully, recent developments confirm a deep and varied multiplayer offering that caters to both solo and co-op preferences.
Solo Players Have Nothing To Fear, Says Saber
Space Marine 2 offers a two-pronged approach to multiplayer, but for those who lean towards singleplayer, there’s nothing to worry about. In an interview with GameReactor, creative director Oliver Hollis-Leick confirmed that the campaign can be played entirely solo, offering players the opportunity to immerse themselves in the narrative at their own pace:
So, the good thing about Space Marine is every single mode is multiplayer. So, you have the co-op campaign, which can be played solo or with up to three players. Then you have the PvE operations mode, which is, again, three-player co-op, but it’s more like an extension of the story.
However, for those who crave the camaraderie and teamwork of co-op, the option to team up with up to two other players for the campaign will also be an option, ensuring that players have the freedom to tackle the game according to their preferences.
Space Marine 2 Offers A Host Of Multiplayer Options
The centerpiece of the co-op experience, as Hollis-Leick mentions, is the all-new Operations mode, which throws players into a squad-based experience where they choose from a roster of six distinct classes. Operations is also touted to be “an extension of the story,” which will be interesting to see.
Operations will feature an AI director that controls enemy spawns and triggers events, making for dynamic gameplay. Completing objectives rewards players with experience and in-game currency, which can be used to upgrade their chosen class’s special abilities and unlock cosmetics.
Space Marine 2 also offers a 6v6 PvP mode called Eternal War, which pits two teams of Space Marines against each other in three distinct match types. Fans of classic team deathmatches will find favor with Annihilation, where the objective boils down to securing the highest kill count within a time limit.
Seize Ground caters to a more strategic approach, tasking teams with capturing and holding designated zones on the map. Finally, Capture and Control offers a unique twist on King of the Hill, with teams vying for control of a single zone that randomly changes location throughout the match.
Saber’s confirmation of solo play for the campaign is a big sigh of relief for fans, and rest assured, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2‘s multiplayer offerings are plentiful and cater to everyone whether they prefer solo or co-op play.
Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 releases on 9 September 2024.
