He also said that players who are new to these games do not need to play the original game or FF7 Remake as the games are created as standalone experiences. Although he added that players could go for FF7 Remake before they jump into Rebirth, it is not necessary. The director stated that they have based the combat in FF7 Rebirth on Final Fantasy 7 Remake but there are also new elements that are crucial to let players team up with their allies.

Players will be able to use new Synergy skills and abilities to get an upper hand over their enemies. Hamaguchi also said that the upcoming game has an evolved materia system with “many more materia types than in Final Fantasy 7 Remake,” to help aid players during combat.

When asked about the presence of several chocobo types in the upcoming game that was shown in the latest trailer, Hamaguchi stated,

“We wanted to pay homage to the original FINAL FANTASY VII – there were many different types of chocobo in that game, such as the river chocobos or the mountain chocobos! One of the big draws of FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH is that you can explore the vast world map, so we re-imagined the different chocobos to become important features of that exploration. You can use them to fly through the air, climb mountains, or speed across water surfaces.”

The director stated that players will also be able to enjoy the Chocobos they collect by entering them in the Gold Saucer Chocobo races. The game director also shed some light on the redesign of vehicles from the original game and said that a lot of research was involved in the basic structure as well as external appearance to make the vehicles look real and functional.

Naoki Hamaguchi stated that the biggest problem they faced was to create a world that would let players travel as well as explore the whole world. He said that the developers put in a lot of thought and hard work to get a world that is neither too small nor too big and the world of FF7 Rebirth perfectly balances the two.

Although the game will main the storyline from the original title, there will be new story content to give a revamped experience. There is also side story content added that will help tell the main story. Talking about the structure of the game and how the added new content will affect it, Hamaguchi said,

“Unlike the previous title, which had new content made available to the player following developments in the story, FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH has been designed to allow the player to freely select what order to play much of its content in.”

He stated that players will be free to take a detour and enjoy the expansive world whenever they want. Hamaguchi also added that several new details and characters in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth were seen in the original FF7 compilation but were not featured and he’s excited for players to enjoy the freedom of choice that the game has.
