Finestkind is a crime thriller delving into the lives of individuals who embody the essence of the earth—a gritty narrative infused with themes of family, loyalty, and indelible memories. FandomWire called Finestkind: “The result is a straightforward, authentic family crime thriller that works based on the parameters Mr. Helgeland has set for the audience.”

The storyline of Finestkind unfolds around two brothers hailing from opposite sides of the tracks. Tommy embodies the blue-collar spirit, while Charlie emerges from a lily-white world. United by the same mother, Donna, who parted ways with Tom’s father, Eldridge, a high-seas fisherman, the brothers, despite their disparate upbringings, maintain a close bond as brothers should.

Despite Charlie’s graduation with an English degree and acceptance into the pre-law program at Boston University, he yearns to spend the summer fishing in perilous waters. Initially denied by Tom, who aims to shield his younger brother, Charlie eventually persuades him. Despite objections from Charlie’s father, Gary, Tom joins the family fishing boat, Finestkind.

Paramount+’s Finestkind Ending Explained: Why is Eldridge’s boat seized?

The Finestkind faced a seizure when authorities captured images of the vessel fishing in international waters. This routine occurrence involves Tom (Ben Foster) monitoring the Coast Guard. Given the scarcity of clams and oysters in their bay, Tom decides to venture farther east, resulting in the most significant catch they have ever witnessed.

However, when authorities surveil the area from a plane, complications arise when they detect a winch seizing as their sea cage becomes entangled in the water below. In a race against time, Tom, spotting an approaching aircraft, wields a torch to free the steel wire rope. Unfortunately, the process takes too long, and the plane manages to capture photos of the vessel.

Among these images is one of Tom expressing his discontent with an unmistakable gesture. Upon Finestkind’s return to port, the boat and its catch fall prey to seizure. In the subsequent court hearing, Tom and Eldridge (Tommy Lee Jones) faced a hefty $100,000 fine, and the ship was confiscated. This effectively puts Eldridge’s family legacy on ice when the fine is paid.

What’s Charlie’s idea to get the Finestkind back?

Charlie (Toby Wallace), with the help of his girlfriend Mabel (Jenna Ortega), plans to smuggle heroin into the country. Mabel works for a local drug kingpin, Pete Weeks, distributing the “hell dust” across the city. Tom is against the idea, knowing the risk it puts him and his little brother.

However, they proceed. They are given $20,000 in cash as a down payment and will receive $80,000 when the drugs are delivered. Tom’s crew is initially successful. Tom and Charlie deliver the smack to a local coffee shop where the gangster operates. Unfortunately, a group of armed men pretending to be cops stole the shipment at gunpoint.

Pete threatens Tom, Charlie, Mabel, and the rest of the crew and their family to return the shipment, or they will be killed. Initially, Tom accuses Mabel of being a snitch, but she proves her innocence. That leaves the question of who stole the drugs in Finestkind. Skeemo, their friend who has an addiction to opioids, sold out his friends and told a rival gang where to intercept the shipment.

How does Eldridge save Tom and Charlie?

Eldridge shoots and kills Pete in the Finestkind at the coffee shop. After Eldridge finds out that Tom and Charlie owe Pete a shipment of heroin worth almost a half-million dollars, he takes matters into his own hands. With a stage four cancer diagnosis and not much longer to live, the decision was simple. Eldridge walks into the coffee shop and tells Pete he’s Tom’s father.

He asks him to leave his son alone and offers his life savings. (He is carrying the money in a brown paper bag.) Pete refuses and berates Eldridge, who asks him again politely. After another refusal, Pete pulls out a gun and shoots two of Pete’s armed associates. Eldridge then shoots Pete twice, killing him. He sits, and Tom and Charlie come running in.

Eldridge laments at how much clams are selling for on the open market. Later, Charlie tells his father he is deferring his attending law school to help Tom. Charlie also asks for a loan. Gary initially refuses. However, he then supports Charlie by not just loaning the money but also helping him with a business plan. Gary tells Charlie that his son must also take him wherever he goes.

The movie ends with the crew and Mabel interfering with the prison transport at the bridge. When the van stopped, the staff from the ship cheered and yelled into the ship speaker so Eldridge could hear them showing their thanks and respect.
