While Sony and Marvel both are trying hard to win back their audience, with their focus now on quality, we can expect some pretty exciting news on the horizon. One of the most anticipated projects on MCU’s slate is Avengers: Secret Wars. And Downey Jr. might just make a return as Tony Stark.

The former Sherlock Holmes himself seems pretty interested in coming back to the MCU!

Robert Downey Jr. is “open-minded” to his return as Iron Man

Robert Downey Jr.‘s Tony Stark aka Iron Man probably had one of the best character development in the entire series. Starting as a self-obsessed playboy, billionaire, and philanthropist, Tony grew up to be a brave protector willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good.

In a recent session of Variety‘s Actors on Actors, actress Jodie Foster asked the Oppenheimer star if he would ever put on Iron Man’s suit again. He replied:

It’s just crazily in my DNA. Probably the most like-me character I’ve ever played, even though he’s way cooler than I am. I’ve become surprisingly open-minded to the idea. Between “Nyad” and [“Night Country”] and, for me, “Oppenheimer” and then “Sympathizer,” it really is crazy because we look pretty good.

I was actually looking at the stills we were taking, making sure: “Do we still look kind of OK?” I’m like, “We look pretty good.”

Back in 2019, Downey Jr. bid an emotional goodbye to the MCU in Avengers: Endgame. However, not all fans are open to the idea of his comeback, which might happen in Avengers: Secret Wars.

Robert Downey Jr.’s interest receives mixed reactions from fans

When Tony Stark died, it made a lot of fans bawl their eyes out in theatres. A few of them even petitioned to have their favorite hero back. But as time went by, a lot of them realized his death cemented his legacy in the MCU.

Hence, there was a mixed reaction on social media when Downey Jr. expressed his desire to wear the suit again. Some of the fans said on X:

Quite a lot of comments were directed at the fact that Tony’s return after his emotional death in Endgame would make his sacrifice obsolete. While there were others who gave in to nostalgia, begging the character to come back in the upcoming 2027 film Avengers: Secret Wars.

However, we can’t be certain if Tony Stark will ever make a return to the MCU after his demise in Avengers: Endgame. But Robert Downey Jr. being open to it, certainly leaves the door open to all the possibilities of his on-screen comeback, especially after the scale of Marvel Cinematic Universe expanded exponentially due to the Multiverse saga.
