Epic Games’ Fortnite is one of the most played and popular titles out there, and the collaborations and new things that the developers do with the game have only given it a boost in popularity. There has been the addition of several exciting things, but there is also stuff that is no longer in the game.

A lot has changed in Epic Games’ approach to Fortnite since the game’s release in 2017 and now. The ex-mastermind of the game, Donald Mustard, recently spoke about what he wanted Fortnite to be, and it seems like the fans are realizing what they have lost in all these years.

Donald Mustard is the former Chief Creative Officer of Epic Games and was a big part of making the battle royale shooter Fortnite into what it is today before leaving the company back in September 2023. Mustard recently sat for an interview with Game File, where he spoke extensively about the game, its development, and what he wanted to see it become.

One of the main points that the former lead creator touched upon was the long-gone Fortnite live events. These events occurred within the matches and were connected with the main storyline. Mustard said that it was one of the things that were very close to his heart, but it had to be removed as the event team needed to work on other things.

Mustard said that he wanted to create Fortnite, as such, it felt like being in one’s backyard in the 80s or playing with toys. He further said:

There was no one there saying, ‘Well, Spider-Man’s allowed to this, and Batman’s only allowed to do this. And Barbie can’t hang out with Spiderman.’

I’m like, I want to create something where you can hang out with your friends and express yourself however you want.

However, this was unfortunately not possible, probably due to differences with Tim Sweeney’s plans for the game, but fans are not happy with this and have realized that Mustard should have been at Epic and worked on the game to make it much better than it is now.

Players also blamed Epic Games for destroying Fortnite’s identity and focusing on the multiverse. One fan said that the developer is trying to “promote Unreal Engine and make a Roblox clone.”

Another fan said, “I’m starting to realize Donald Mustard is what made Fortnite special,” with one adding that Epic Games needs to bring Donald back as his “genuine love” is what made Fortnite special.

They added that the game now feels like a “cash grab,” and that’s why many who used to enjoy the game have walked away from it. Many said that the community “massively” misses him, and he never should have walked out and saved the game.
