Fortnite is one of the most successful games of all time, it was incredibly bold and rare for a publisher to release a free-to-play battle royale game in 2017 but the gamble paid off. Each update features new content that fans will enjoy but rumors are suggesting that Epic Games will use nostalgia this following season.

Taking a trip down memory lane isn’t necessarily bad but could indicate creativity’s void. The developers will take the community on a different approach, which may hint at the longevity of Fortnite.

Every time a new chapter or season is coming, the gaming community is looking for clues to where Epic Games will take its iconic battle royale, but this year may be just a quick reflection of previous chapters. Recent leaks of a potential roadmap suggest that older seasons would make a comeback.

The company has a great track record of collaborating with other popular franchises like LEGO which introduced a new game mode for players to enjoy. It can be unfortunate to see Epic Games not make any bold or creative moves this year that could rival previous events.

Perhaps there is a massive problem internally that could prevent the company from making external arrangements or deals, or they saw the success of previous seasons and thought that lightning would strike twice.

Nostalgia may be the current driving force of Epic Games but people nowadays are less inclined to tether themselves from yesterday and are always on the lookout for something new and fresh. If the game fails to quench the thirst for something new, then the future of the most successful live-service multiplayer game is in peril.

Epic Games believes The Future of Fortnite Relies in the Past

This chapter of the game introduced several new points of interest as well as alternatives for vaults in earlier seasons called bunkers. Changes like these can pique the interest of the players and will encourage them to hop back in and jump out of the battle bus to explore new additions like items and locations.

Epic Games does not have an unlimited supply of ideas, which is why it is prudent for a live service to heavily rely on collaborations and incorporate certain concepts into the game. The collaboration between Fortnite and Avatar: The Last Airbender is a tremendous success and quite timely given the surge of hype and anticipation the animated series is getting after the recent Netflix adaptation.

Creativity is essential in the live service space of gaming and player counts will certainly dwindle if the hype dies down. It may be good to revisit classic locations but nostalgia can’t always be the safety net of these major gaming companies.

The leaked roadmap suggests that this year’s Fortnite will most likely be a rehash of older seasons and it looks like a last-ditch effort for Epic Games as they have finally run out of ideas on how to improve the game.
