Zack Snyder loves Fortnite! Speaking to IGN at Gamescom 2023 in Cologne, the famed director expressed his passion for Epic Games’ popular battle royale, stating that he went down a “rabbit hole” with the game. Snyder appeared at Opening Night Live at Gamescom 2023 to show off his upcoming Netflix movie Rebel Moon and the video game that will expand the brand-new, Star Wars-esque sci-fi franchise.

He is known for his larger-than-life action flicks, but he’s also a person who needs to unwind from his demanding work. And as it turns out, Fortnite is where he finds reprieve. You might think he’d be donning a powerful Batman or Superman suit in the game, but he’s picked a much more unusual and quirkier skin.

During the interview with IGN at Gamescom 2023, Snyder explained how he got into Fortnite with his son and wanted to play the game with him. However, his son didn’t like the game, seemingly leaving his dad no choice but to keep playing by himself. Snyder ended up getting sucked into the game.

He admitted how he “went down a bad rabbit hole with Fortnite” and that he “took a pretty deep dive” into the free-to-play online shooter. When asked whether he preferred to play the build or no build mode, he expressly replied with “no build”, referring to the so-called “Zero Build” battle royale mode, in which players do not build structures.

When asked about his skin in Fortnite, probably nobody would have been able to guess Snyder’s response. The celebrated battle royale is known for its plethora of collaborations and crossover events with all sorts of franchises, which have brought a whole swath of pop culture characters into the game.

However, the A-list writer behind Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice didn’t pick either of the famous DC superheroes he personally helped bring to the silver screen. Instead, he mains the blue-skinned alien Mr. Meeseeks from Rick and Morty. He is a weird, but helpful character from the show, hailing from a species that was created to serve one single purpose and can’t die until said purpose has been fulfilled.

Getting sucked into Fortnite isn’t Zack Snyders’ only foray into the world of gaming. At Gamescom 2023, after all, he didn’t just show off his upcoming Netflix movie Rebel Moon but also revealed details about the game set in the same universe. With Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire scheduled for release on December 22, 2023, and Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver launching on April 19, 2024, Snyder is setting up a large sci-fi franchise from scratch.

This will include a tie-in co-op RPG. As revealed at Gamescom 2023, Snyder has teamed up with Super Evil Megacorp to bring the game to Netflix subscribers. Taking place after the events of the movies, the upcoming game is set to expand the space opera universe.

The revered director has also shown interest in making a Gears of War movie. He stated at Gamescom 2023, “I mean, Gears has always come up in sort of our circle, I was a fan of the game.” Not one, but two adaptations are already in the works, with Netflix producing both a live-action movie and an animated TV show based on the game.

It’s not clear yet if Snyder will have the chance to fulfill his dream and bring Gears of War onto the silver screen. Given his existing partnership with Netflix, there’s a good chance he may still get attached to the project.
