Fortnite may have become a pop culture phenomenon, but it is not for CliffyB. When Xbox launched its second console, the Xbox 360, one game changed it all. Gears of War had made up its own sub-genre with a never-before-seen cover system and extreme violence. This title even had one of the most original weapons ever created: the Lancer, an assault rifle with a chainsaw.

This game was created by Cliff Bleszinski; this director made three of the entries in Gears of War, then parted ways with Microsoft. Bleszinski gave FandomWire an interview while he was promoting his new show, Wolves Den. He talked about the industry, including battle royales like Fortnite.

After he ended things with the franchise that made him successful, Bleszinski couldn’t get any other title to have the success that Gears of War accomplished.

He had been working with Epic Games for more than 20 years, so his original plan was to retire from videogame design, but he tried to launch his own studio, Boss Key Productions. This studio launched a FPS game called LawBreakers; the project died quickly.

In a recent interview with FandomWire, Bleszinski discussed his new role as a judge on Wolves Den, a game show similar to Shark Tank. He discussed how he’s tired of battle royales and how tough the industry is. He said the following:

I’m tired of battle royale. We tried smoke chasing it when I had my studio with Radical Heights, failed with it, and it just feels…played out.

He tried several times, but the players are a rough audience.

Games Like Fortnite Are Not for Everyone

Radical Heights was the latest lead project by Cliff Bleszinski.

Bleszinski said that for the moment he is not going to direct or lead any new videogame project; he mentioned that he is fine being only a consultant or investor; he said, “The videogame business is ROUGH, y’all!” As for future devs, he gives them pretty good advice: they don’t have to chase the trend; they need to be original and end up thinking about what will come next when it is over.

This creator made a huge impact on the industry landscape when he created GoW. No other game has implemented the cover action as organically as this franchise. The story was great, and the lore was very well written. All of these features make GoW one of the greatest franchises in videogame history.

This kind of milestone is hard to replicate numerous times. But Cliff Bleszinski is still involved in a lot of projects.

I'm a big fan of movies and videogames in general. I really love Pokémon and Godzilla. One of my favorite games is The Last of Us, Part II. A compelling and well-written story is always welcome.
