Xbox has been in the news recently due to rumors revolving around Microsoft letting its console exclusive titles head to other platforms. When one thinks of the most iconic exclusives that Xbox has, franchises like Halo and Gears of War come to mind, the latter of which received universal acclaim for its original trilogy and positive reviews for its other games.

Since the exclusivity could be coming to an end for some of these titles, it seems like the perfect time to revisit the Gears of War series, which one fan chose to do and realized that it had plenty of disturbing underlying themes that it wouldn’t have gotten away with today.

Xbox Exclusive Gears of War Was a Series of Pretty “Hardcore” Games

Some of the underlying themes in the Xbox exclusive Gears of War trilogy are quite disturbing.

A Gears of War player took a closer look at some of the themes that the original Xbox exclusive trilogy contained and expressed his thoughts on Reddit. The OG titles have been loved by fans, but according to the Reddit user, there is a chance people do not remember just how “hardcore” these games used to really be.

Firstly, the series tries to show how the “Fascist government is the good guy” because of the circumstances that the Coalition of Ordered Governments, or COG, has to handle due to the locusts attacking humanity.

In Gears of War, the COG decides to declare martial law when it is faced with a humanity-ending situation, but obviously, people are not too fond of that. The government in the game also wipes out millions of people to counter the locusts, which is truly messed up, but some might ask, was it the only way to deal with the scenario? This is where the concept of “Fascist government is the good guy” emerges, as it is a highly divisive topic.

The Trilogy Included Disturbing Forced Breeding Farms

If the fascist government was not enough, the games also included rape farms.

Since humanity’s fate was at stake, the COG had to ensure its continued survival by creating breeding farms, where women were basically forced to get impregnated by the top brass soldiers in the government. This was done to make up for all of the lives that were getting lost, so making new humans as quickly as possible was the solution the government ultimately came up with.

These children would then be turned into soldiers when they grew up to fight in the never-ending war.

To make things even more disturbing, the tie-in comic series Barren revealed that a woman called Alex Brand was also sent to one of these breeding farms and got “raped for years” in the hopes of getting her forcibly pregnant. However, the government finds out that she is infertile, so all that time of extensive torture had absolutely no point.

It does not get more messed up than this.
