The two most important individuals involved in the success of a manga or anime series are the creator and the editors. Their coordination and love for their work make the series lovable for fans and achieve great merits. However, that was not the case during the creation of the Prologue movie of the popular anime and manga series, Jujutsu Kaisen. Gege Akutami, the mastermind behind the epic manga and anime series Jujutsu Kaisen, had a lot of conflicts with his editors, which resulted in changing him just after its first chapter.
While working on the prequel Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Akutami’s idea and concept for the story were not liked by the editor, and was asked to change quite a few times, which resulted in Jujutsu Kaisen getting a new editor.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Got a New Editor Just After Chapter 1
In 2017, Akutami experienced writer’s block with his manga, having lost the inspiration he had after reading My Hero Academia and Hinomaru Sumo. They were so captivated by the two series that they began to doubt their writing skills to develop something that could compete with them in the manga world. After working hard on a story, they showed their editor Yamanaka a prototype storyboard for a horror manga series. Their first editor Yamanaka believed the the story was interesting but too dark and persuaded them to give it a school setting which was not liked by Akutami.
Although Akutami was able to build an experience that ultimately evolved into the fan-favorite film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, the story had to go through several alterations that Akutami did not approve of. As a result, Yamanaka was transferred following the publication of the first chapter. Despite the alterations, Akutami believes the original concept should have been maintained.
Gege Akutami Believed The Original Concept was Better
During the monthly series’ publishing, Akutami had no desire to have his series included in Weekly Shonen Jump. Akutami did not design any ideas for the narrative when they began this series, but they did have the concept of giving the characters a cool yet darker appeal. Even though they had to go through several revisions, Yuta and Rika continued with the same outline as in the final result. The story’s goal was to create sorcerers who could stop Yuta and Rika from killing others.
Giving it a school setting clashed with Akutami’s idea of a horror-like manga. This was not at all liked by the creator and to this day, they believe that the original concept was better for the story and would have earned more appreciation and praise from the fans and critics.
