Ghostrunner 2 is the latest title from One More Level and 505 Games, which features the return of Jack the Ghostrunner. The game has an exciting one-hit kill system, with a fast respawn, so it never takes long for players to jump right back into the action.

As fans of the previous title were likely expecting, this game presents a whole series of challenges in order to complete the story. In Ghostrunner 2, every combat decision matters, and the upgrades you choose could mean life or death.

This guide is a way for gamers to get a better understanding of the skill tree system, and what they might want to include as part of it. In order to add more upgrades, players will have to grab purple memory items along the way, which will open up slots to use.

The Ghostrunner 2 Rooting Upgrade is a Must

Ghostrunner 2
Rooting is the perfect upgrade for those who do not want to settle on a single category.

The first upgrade that gamers are absolutely going to want is called Rooting, and it fits in the system category. While it does have a large install cost of 8, this is easily the most valuable upgrade in the game.

The motherboard system limits users to five columns of four, for a total of 20 possible skills at one time. These columns only allow players to use one category of skills, and with eight different categories, that means three would normally go unused.

The Rooting upgrade does away with the column designations and allows gamers to place an upgrade anywhere on the motherboard. This is exceptionally useful, because there will likely be times when you want to use one or two upgrades from a category, but not commit to it entirely.

Smart Deflect Is the Next Essential Upgrade in Ghostrunner 2

Ghostrunner 2
Smart Deflect is will give you some comfort at a distance.

Smart Deflect will become available in the sword category, and unless you really want a challenge, this is a must have upgrade. The Smart Deflect skill will return projectiles back to their source, which is incredibly handy when you’re being attacked by a gunner.

Instead of having to worry about aiming back at shooters while three enemies charge you, this ability automatically sends back the blasts.

It is a skill that is useful when you need to work on crowd control. You can usually get a kill on weaker enemies when sending the shots back at them, and then there is less of a chance you will die as you progress.

Smooth Moves Will Enhance Your Other Upgrades

Ghostrunner 2
Smooth Moves will make you look like a pro gamer by the end.

The Smooth Moves skill works in great harmony with the aforementioned Smart Deflect ability. Smooth Moves makes deflecting projectiles and performing a perfect parry much easier. So now, with Smart Deflect, not only will you be returning fire back to your enemies, you will also be able to do so much easier.

The ability to easily parry in Ghostrunner 2 is also of vital importance, since some enemies cannot be defeated without a perfect parry. In these situations, you will be very glad you added this upgrade to your motherboard.

Blade Coating Might Get You Out of a Sticky Situation

Ghostrunner 2
Blade Coating will prevent an easy win for stronger ranged enemies.

While some ranged enemies are capable of being blocked, not all of them can be deflected without an upgrade. This is where the Blade Coating skill comes into play. Blade Coating will allow you to block Scorchman’s and Chook’s laser attacks.

Given the fact that these combatants are going to make your survival much more difficult from long range, being able to block them can mean the difference between life and death.

Several times in the game you will come across situations where you need to get up close and personal with multiple assailants. When that happens, there is usually a Scorchman or Chook standing at a distance with the perfect aim for any challenger. The Blade Coating ability could protect you just enough to get out of these tough situations.

It should also be noted that while you can block these shots with Blade Coating, the impact will take a significant amount of stamina. So, like any other time in the game, you will want to move fast.

Ghost Thrusters Will Let You Phase Through Your Problems

Ghostrunner 2
Ghost Thrusters will provide you the brief immunity you need to evade tough situations.

The Ghost Thrusters ability is more than a fun play on words, and is easily one of the best skills on this list, even if you haven’t noticed it working. It allows the player to dash through projectiles and melee attacks, making you invulnerable for that brief amount of time. The funny thing about this ability is that everything happens so fast you might not even know when it is working.

When it comes to the Ghost Thrusters skill, you might not need it initially, but it will save you in the end. The boss fight at the finale of the game in particular is absolutely a great place to get use out of this upgrade.

It should be noted that there is a slight side effect to this ability, where dashing takes 10% more stamina. But in the long term, 10% isn’t much. This skill pairs well with Hydraulics Adjustment upgrade, which will reduce cost of stamina by 15%.

Ultimate Booster I and II Are Last, But Not Least

Ghostrunner 2
The Ultimate Booster abilities can save you time and energy.

While the Ultimate Booster upgrades are pretty standard, leveling up your best ability is never a bad idea. The recharge is going to be slow and when it comes to the ultimate you might forget you even have it. But when you do remember, it’s a game changer.

The ultimate ability is like using a clue coin to solve a hard puzzle, sometimes you just need to use it and move on. So when you do use it, make sure it’s going to have maximum impact on your enemies.

Ghostrunner 2 is an exciting game with many twists and turns, which can present surprising challenges. It is important to ensure that when you go into battle you are equipped with the best upgrades available.

That said, keep in mind that while this guide lists upgrades which will likely be helpful to most players, everyone has a different style of play. If these skills do not work for you, then try out other abilities that fit your skill set. And most importantly, enjoy your journey, as you return to the exciting world of Ghostrunner 2.
