Created by Vince Gilligan, Breaking Bad has aged well, as the show is considered to be the greatest TV Series of all time, with a strong rating of 9.5 on IMDb. The show is absolutely flawless, giving timeless entertainment, and they have written the characters with intense care and reflectively crafted. From the episodes to the wider themes featured in the story. Hence, even after 15 years, the show had memorable characters like Walter White, Jesse Pinkman, Saul Goodman, and most importantly Gustavo “Gus” Fring.
While the cast members played their respective roles flawlessly, it was Giancarlo Esposito, who became one of the major reasons to watch the show. However, things would have been very different if the actor had not blackmailed Vince Gilligan to make him a regular character in Breaking Bad, forever changing the show for good.
Giancarlo Esposito Blackmails The Creator of Breaking Bad
Giancarlo Esposito excels at playing villains in different series. Throughout his career, he has played a number of villainous roles in his illustrious career. However, his portrayal of Gus Fring in the renowned Breaking Bad TV Series is by far the best that cements him as one of the most talented actors of this generation.
However, Vince Gilligan had initially planned out things differently as he wanted to feature Esposito for only three or four episodes. However, as per Reuters, the actor was tired of the producers as they kept calling him for guest appearances in the show. Tired of making guest appearances, he blackmailed Gilligan to make him a regular on the show so that he could “explore all of his character’s many secrets.”
The decision to make The Mandalorian actor the central villain in the show has resulted in an intense and brilliant storyline, that would compel the viewers to binge-watch the entire show in one sitting. Despite the show’s immense popularity, it was close to getting canceled after the 3rd season.
Breaking Bad Was Almost Dropped After The 3rd Season
During an exclusive interview with Esquire, Vince Gilligan shared that the show was not meant to be watched by everyone. As a result, he struggled a lot to find a studio that would like to handle the franchise.
“Breaking Bad didn’t get a ‘no’ from everybody in town, only because we were smart enough not to pitch to everybody in town. I figured this was not going to be everybody’s cup of tea, so it really wasn’t surprising that the show got turned down a lot.”
AMC decided to take a risk on the show and it was worth it as Breaking Bad went on to become the most popular TV Series of all time. However, it nearly got canceled after the third season; FX showcased its interest in the show. However, upon learning this AMC renewed the show for the 4th season. But the real fun began, when Netflix decided to air the first three seasons of the show, inviting a whole new generation of fans, and making the show more popular than ever.
Breaking Bad can be streamed on Netflix.
