Gus Fring might just go down as one of the greatest villainous but also the coolest villains in the history of drama series. Giancarlo Esposito who portrays the role of the poker-faced, drug kingpin in the series Breaking Bad and its spin-off, Better Call Saul is all fired up and looking for a spin-off that would further explore the back story and origins of his character.
Giancarlo Esposito opens up about a possible Gus Fring spin-off
Gustavo Fring was the founder and manager of a food range across the United States of America in both series, under the pretext of which he ran a multi-billion dollar meth empire. Although there have been some flashbacks in Breaking Bad that explained a lot of things about his relationship with the Cartel. Better Call Saul which served as a prequel to the series shed further light on the chronicles of Gus Fring and how he uprooted and disposed of even the smartest members of his sworn enemies: The Salamanca Crime family.
In a recent interview with Variety on the Red carpet of the 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards, Giancarlo Esposito opened up about the possibility of a Gus Fring spinoff which will further reveal the story of his origins and the rise to power of the Chilean drug kingpin. He said,
“I have a lot of premises and I like to push. I am talking to Vince Gilligan right now. I would tell him the ‘The Rise of Gus’. Wait a few years, he’s working on other shows and then come back to me because the Rise of Gus is interesting. To find out what are the pieces that made up Gustavo Fring and where he came from in terms of relationship to the hierarchy of Chile would be interesting to see.”
The Kaleidoscope actor has always been open about a Gus Fring spinoff
This wasn’t the first time that Giancarlo Esposito has opened up about his desire to make a Gustavo Fring spin-off. A few years ago in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the American actor revealed that he is very eager to explore the origins of Gus Fring and how it would fit a puzzle and reveal how he rose to power. He said,
“I’ve always kept these [Breaking Bad] pillars in my head, as much as I’ve wanted so much as an actor to explore Gus’s previous life — Gus’ life in Chile, all these things. There is a yearning inside me, and I keep coming back to the Rise of Gus. It fits the puzzle, and we could see where he had come from and maybe explore more of who he really is underneath the mask.“

A new spin-off of Breaking Bad though might not be necessary but is definitely something that the fans would want to see as Better Call Saul ended up being a huge disappointment at the Emmys. The show received 53 Emmy Award nominations throughout its six-season long run and did not win a single one of them. Breaking Bad on the other hand was absolutely spectacular at the Emmys and won 16 Emmys during its five-season long run.
Both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are currently streaming on Netflix.
