Teyonah Parris has come out in support of her first Marvel Cinematic Universe outing, The Marvels, which has currently landed on Disney+. The film had a very tumultuous run at the box office, being Marvel’s first proper financial dud in theatres, grossing $199.7 million worldwide (according to The Numbers) against a budget of $270 million.

Parris has come out to say that the film, which is currently streaming, should at least be given a chance by fans. However, despite earning a significant amount at the box office (while not breaking even) the film was worse received than the lowest-grossing DCEU film, which failed to even make what the Brie Larson project made.

Blue Beetle earned less but won more fans

According to the Numbers, Blue Beetle earned $128 million at the box office, which was considerably less than what The Marvels made, however, the film was still pretty well received by fans, praising it for bringing the character to the silver screen. On the other hand, The Marvels was not just disliked for its plot, but also for what it did with the characters. Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan was the main highlight of the project, but the film was otherwise largely forgettable and felt subpar as an entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Blue Beetle was able to not only wow fans with its character work but was a genuinely decent endeavor. While this version of the character could have come off as a Cyborg rip-off, the character was able to carve out its little niche in the DCEU, bringing it a lot of praise for actor Xolo Maridueña, who essayed the role of Jaime Reyes.

Teyohan Parris wants people to see the film before making an opinion

While a lot of opinions about the film were circulating in a slew of spaces, there were multiple reasons cited for why the film failed.  Parris has said that she has not done a single complete press tour for any project she has worked on in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actress also said:

“I think there was a lot of talk, and people hadn’t seen it. So that’s frustrating when people comment on things they haven’t actually experienced. There are a lot of people who put a lot of their time, spirit, and talent into bringing this forward.”

The actress has come out in defense of the film as a renewed slew of hateful comments have taken over social media, given the film’s digital release. However, if viewership is to be believed, The Marvels has managed to be one of the lowest-viewed MCU films even on Disney Plus, which begs the question: is it even worth giving a chance?
