Having overall success throughout her Marvel career, Brie Larson came up with The Marvels in 2023, in an attempt to replicate the incredible success of Captain Marvel’s first solo outing. Unfortunately, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani’s movie made history for all the wrong reasons, as it broke the record set by The Incredible Hulk in 2008 for the worst opening weekend in MCU history.

However, despite fans boycotting The Marvels, and calling out Brie Larson’s movie for being the worst MCU film so far, Teyonah Parris isn’t ready to accept the outrage. Having a message for those who were quick to cross The Marvels off their watch list, Parris begged moviegoers to give it a shot.

The Marvels Marked an All-Time Low for Marvel Studios

Released as a follow-up to 2019’s Captain Marvel, Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani’s The Marvels faced a major downfall at the box office. Hitting the theatres with the hope of replicating the prequel’s success, the 2023 movie turned into a box-office disaster over the weekend. Breaking the record of 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, for its worst opening weekend, Larson’s movie marked an all-time low for Marvel Studios.

While Captain Marvel opened to $153M at the domestic box office in 2019, The Marvels only managed to bag $47M in its opening weekend. Perhaps due to the Hollywood strikes and the so-called “superhero fatigue” which left moviegoers and comic lovers uninterested, Brie Larson’s 2023 MCU flick failed miserably.

This box office failure of The Marvels led everyone on social media to come up with their own theories for the fizzle. Eventually, the online drama surrounding the movie caused it to fall ever further into the abyss, as people’s theories and negative comments about the film led interested audiences to cross The Marvels off their watch list.

Teyonah Parris Begged Fans to Give Brie Larson’s Movie Another Chance

Realizing how the “superhero fatigue” as well as the fan theories reasoning the failure of The Marvels is leading to further failure of Brie Larson’s movie, Teyonah Parris begged fans to reconsider the film. Sending out a message to audiences during her interview with People, Parris asked fans to “show grace” to the film.

I think there was a lot of talk, and people hadn’t seen it. So that’s frustrating when people comment on things they haven’t actually experienced. There’s a lot of people who put a lot of their time, spirit, and talent into bringing this forward.

Begging people to first watch the movie and then share their opinions online, Teyonah Parris asked netizens to not follow in others’ footsteps. Instead of crossing The Marvels off their watch list based on fan theories and people’s opinions, Parris asked people to have first-hand experience of the film.

I would hope that people would give it a fair shot by just seeing it or trying it. If you don’t like the first 10, 15 minutes, fair enough. Your time is precious. But we make these films so that it can be an escape from your real world in a moment for levity and joy and fantasticalness.

You do not have to like something, but give it a chance by actually seeing it and forming your own opinion, and if you did, then that’s fair. That’s how you feel, and I cannot take that from you.”

Unwilling to give up on The Marvels’ potential to mesmerize audiences, Teyonah Parris still believes there’s hope for the movie, once people give it a shot.

The Marvels is available on Disney+.
