Super Bowl LVIII is where the trailer for the movie Twisters dropped, starring Glen Powell. And contrary to expectations, this film is not a reboot of the 1996 movie with almost the same title but is speculated to be a sequel. It’s also worth noting that the script comes from the brilliant mind of Mark L. Smith, the same writer who crafted the masterpiece that earned Leonardo DiCaprio his sole Oscar win, The Revenant. Despite this star-studded lineup, it seems the anticipation for this tornado of a film hasn’t quite reached its peak just yet.
Can Glen Powell’s Twisters Make a Storm in the Box Office?
Step into the summer of 2024, a storm named Twisters is brewing. The Super Bowl showed the audience some glimpses of how it was going to be. And by the looks of it, this sequel to the underrated 1996 film Twister isn’t just about chasing tornadoes, it’s about chasing nostalgia with a fresh twist.
While Twister may not be the first movie that springs to mind for a sequel, Glen Powell is bringing the story alive with new characters and a script from the talented Mark L. Smith, the creative force behind The Revenant. But amidst the anticipation, whispers suggest that this script might not be the whirlwind of excitement fans are hoping for. Film critic Jeff Sneider shared his thoughts on The InSneider, and didn’t hesitate to voice his concerns. He wrote,
“I read the script and thought it was fine nothing too special, but it had some good ideas. Of course, I imagine it’s tough to read a script like that and be able to gauge the final product, as so much of it is brief lines of technical jargon regarding tornadoes and storm chasers. But I’m not sure the “emotion” was there for me. We’ll see…”
While Jeff Sneifer’s emotions weren’t exactly stirred by it, there’s still a window for the undecided to leap to conclusions about whether to tune in. Until then, anticipation builds for further updates and insights into the film.
What Can Fans Expect from Twisters?
This movie, centered around the Tornado Chasers, aims to pay homage to the classics while introducing fresh elements into the storyline. Alongside Glen Powell, the cast also features Kiernan Shipka, David Corenswet, and Sasha Lane. Powell in an interview with Deadline revealed,
“It’s definitely not a reboot. We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one. It’s a completely original story. There are no characters from the original movie back, so it’s not really a continuation. It’s just its own standalone story in the modern-day.”
He further revealed,
“I don’t think anyone has brought up this movie in forever, but talking to people, they’re like, ‘That was one of my favorite movies growing up. That movie terrified me.If you want to make movies of a certain size and scope and scale, you have to figure out what can connect with everyone around the world in every territory. And humans versus weather is a very universal idea—how powerless we really are in the face of these cataclysmic forces,”
Powell revealed that although underrated, those fortunate enough to have experienced it while growing up were clamoring for a sequel, given the intriguing plot as a major factor in his decision to join the project. While the upcoming movie has garnered significant buzz, the question remains, can it tug at the heartstrings and terrify audiences like the original did back in the day? Only time will tell.
Twisters will release in theaters on July 19, 2024
