Sony PlayStation fans take great pride in the numerous exclusives that make their way to this platform. Over the years, Sony has released numerous first-party games on this platform, and all of them have reached unmatched heights of success. These games range from heartfelt dramas like The Last of Us to incredible epic adventures like God of War.

In fact, God of War is one of Sony’s longest-running franchises; they have released these games on multiple platforms over the years. First-party developer Sony Santa Monica even gave fans a refreshed take on this franchise with its 2018 iteration. To no one’s surprise, God of War 2018 is still one of the most popular games on the PlayStation platform.

God of War 2018 is still an unstoppable force when it comes to popularity

Sony released God of War 3 in 2010, and that title marked the end of series protagonist Kratos’ quest for revenge. He finally killed his father, Zeus, and destroyed the whole world through his actions. Then, he cast himself in the ocean in order to end his own life.

The game was met with universal critical acclaim. Its visuals, its gameplay, performances, story—everything was praised. This was seen as an adequate end to Kratos’ sad story. Fans were satisfied, yet they wanted more games in this series.

The answer was simple: a prequel called God of War: Ascension. This game looked as good as God of War 3, but its mediocre story left fans and critics asking for more. Ultimately, the game was a decent success and a nice filler for hardcore fans.

Then, after a long hiatus, Sony revealed a brand-new game during E3 2016. This game was called God of War, and to everyone’s surprise, it gave this popular franchise a brand new perspective. From a perspective that lingered way behind the character, developers brought the camera to Kratos’ shoulder.

That was not the only change to that game, though; they also gave him a son. They gave him a family, and as a result, he became sympathetic and gained empathy. The story changed from a tale of revenge to a journey that helps both father and son grow.

While staying faithful to what came before, Santa Monica Studio's God of War completely revamped the iconic franchise.

The combat was basically a mix of Dark Souls and older God of War titles. Everything about this game was perfect, and as a result, it became an instant success. Now, this game has sold close to 23 million units.

Let’s not forget that God of War 2018 became the first game in the franchise to officially launch on PC. It is commendable how this game managed to regularly sell to reach this high number. What’s even more impressive is that it is currently the highest-rated Sony game of this generation, sitting at 94 on Metacritic.

God of War 2018 is the prime example of the fact that, if done correctly, a franchise’s overhaul can also become a success. It can win its fans, and it can provide them with an unforgettable experience.

While there have been some issues with its plots, they did not outweigh the amount of enjoyment it gave. It has to be seen if developer Sony Santa Monica keeps this quality consistent with newer installments or not.
