Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire might not be a critical darling. But the Adam Wingard directorial has become a fan favorite among the audience. The most recent installment in the MonsterVerse franchise is their fifth presentation, after 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong.
After being released last month, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has now become the second-highest-grossing movie of the year. It has even surpassed the recently released animated blockbuster, Kung Fu Panda 4.
MonsterVerse Races Ahead of Kung Fu Panda 4 With Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
Even though the Jack Black voiced movie was released before the kaiju feature, it could not hold on to the lead. And now, after Denis Villeneuve’s directorial epic, Dune: Part 2, Godzilla x Kong : The New Empire is at the second highest position. Kung Fu Panda 4 was released 8 years after the third movie in the franchise, something the fans had been eagerly waiting for.
But it looks like all that anticipation fell short; as soon after the release of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, it managed to topple the Panda from its top spot. As reported by X user @HollywoodHandle, the Warner Bros. Picture produced Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has outgrossed The Mike Mitchell directorial. The MonsterVerse movie has managed to collect around $485.2 million at the box office so far, whereas Kung Fu Panda 4 is at $458.9 million. Although it is a tight race, currently the MonsterVerse has managed to make way ahead of the Dragon Warrior.
Fans of Both Fandoms Are Dishing It Out With Each Other
While the MonsterVerse fans are definitely happy with the latest update, the Kung Fu squad is naturally bummed. Both fandoms are dishing it out with each other on social media platforms, as some express their happiness, while others look to showcase their displeasure.
