Over the past few years, there have been several movies and features based on Godzilla, King Kong, and several other Kaijus that have gradually made their way to the entertainment industry. While several of these movies have failed to hit their mark, Godzilla Minus One and the more recently released Godzilla x Kong have been remarkable Kaiju entries.

What makes these movies stand out? While the success of Godzilla Minus One is a whole other tale, Adam Wingard’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has simpler guiding principles. In a new interview, the director revealed how his not wanting to make the same mistake as Gareth Edwards helped him make the two Monster Verse movies that fans dearly love.

Humans are as integral to a Kaiju tale as the monsters themselves. Something that fans saw and loved in the Japanese Oscar-winning Kaiju flick Godzilla Minus One. Yet for the director of Godzilla x Kong and Godzilla vs Kong, Adam Wingard, humans remain more of supporting characters, which he reckons made his movies successful.

While talking to The Wrap post-release of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, he revealed how growing up he wanted more and more of the monster Godzilla as possible. That is exactly what he did when making his latest Kaiju movie by following the principle: simplicity is key.

“And that’s not just about the human stories, but about the monster story, too. We wanted there to be a simplicity of the actual plot and how many characters that there were so that you could get more intimate with them.”

This is something that he learned while making Godzilla vs Kong, leading to several scenes of various actors, including Eiza González’s being cut down or reduced. While it was bad for the human characters, Wingard believes it gave people more time to understand the monsters. A direct contradiction to Gareth EdwardsGodzilla, which launched the MonsterVerse, but spent too much time focusing on human characters.

Adam Wingard loves the monster Godzilla, and it is his love and attachment to the Kaiju that led to the creation of two of the most spectacular Monster Verse movies. So, understandably, fans would want him to make more of these films and it is something that Wingard too looks keen on.

While talking to The Wrap, Wingard remarked,

“I’ve done two movies now and there’s definitely a draw of the idea of making it a trilogy, but we’ll have to wait and see. I definitely have some ideas. We do a lot of easter eggs and hinting at where the series would go. There’s a definitive idea of the direction and the potential monsters that could be appearing in the next one.”

While the prospects look exciting enough, only time will tell when Wingard will return to make another hopefully epic Kaiju tale.

For now, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire can be seen in theatres.
