One of the first things that stuck out to the audiences other than this was the cast that would be featured, being full of A-list celebrities. While fans had no proper knowledge of what the premise of the film would be, upon its release, it managed to captivate audiences in the best ways possible.

It is only natural that after making a film that saw this much success, Gerwig would get a lot of new opportunities. To adapt to something as significant as this always comes with layers of fear and pressure. During a recent interview, the filmmaker revealed that she was afraid of making this film.

Greta Gerwig Feels A Lot Of Pressure For The Adaptation

Greta Gerwig recently gave an interview with Deadline, where she spoke on her upcoming project, The Chronicles of Narnia. Here, the director and screenwriter revealed that the fact that she is an American makes her hesitant and scared about making this adaptation. She elaborated on this, stating that this series, both as books and films, has become an integral part of British culture.

“As a non-British person, I feel a particular sense of wanting to do it correctly… it’s like when Americans do Shakespeare, there’s a slight feeling of reverence and as if maybe we should treat it with extra care. It is not our countryman.”

Being not from the United Kingdom makes her feel she is not qualified to do this as someone from the country. She used an example of when Americans attempt to adapt plays by Shakespeare, something that feels off most slightly. She then went on that state that if those involved in the project handle it with extreme care, they will be able to, perhaps, pull this off and make something just as significant as its predecessors.

Do Fans Agree With Greta Gerwig’s Sentiment?

It is natural for any director to have these doubts when taking on a project as significant and as big as The Chronicles of Narnia, a series that famously made 1.5 billion. However, looking at Greta Gerwig’s past ‘attempts’ at adapting something classic from the past, it is safe to say the fans do not have much to worry about. Barbie is one of the most spectacular movies of all time, despite being based on a plastic doll, and Little Women is a masterpiece written originally by Louisa May Alcott. Gerwig has become a legend when it comes to bringing words on paper, onto the big screen.

Upon Gerwig’s words hitting the Internet, fans quickly used platforms like X to express how they were feeling. One wrote that they understood the pressure, the filmmaker must be going through having to adapt something as classic as iconic as this. One fan even wrote that if she is afraid of messing up this adaptation because of her being American, she should not make it.
