The official announcement by Rockstar Games yesterday about the next Grand Theft Auto title sent the entire gaming community into a frenzy. While Rockstar Games left gamers waiting for the official trailer next month, they gave away nothing else, not even a logo or an official title for the game.

Several speculations surrounding GTA 6 have been doing the rounds for years now, but none more than the game’s release date. Back in March this year, popular GTA insider Tez2 revealed that Rockstar Games might be targeting a Fall 2024 release for their next Grand Theft Auto title. At the same time, Tez2 also revealed that their targets keep changing and are never “set in stone“, and the worst possible scenario might just see the title being pushed to an early 2025 release date.

Tez2 went on to further add that neither Rockstar Games nor Take-Two Interactive could afford to delay the release of the next GTA title beyond 2025 and that the game could be released with a portion of it delayed for a later date to be released in the form of a DLC.

As GTA 5 Crosses 10 Years Since Release, GTA 6 Might Need Another Year

All of these speculations were from earlier this year but could still hold some weight to it, at least until Rockstar Games comes out with an official release schedule for the next GTA title. GTA 5 was previously known for taking the longest time to come out as the title was released back in 2013, which was five years after Grand Theft Auto 4‘s release in 2008.

GTA 6 has already taken more than double that time to come out as Grand Theft Auto 5 celebrated its 10th anniversary a couple of months back. Overall, the upcoming title will be the eighth main entry in the franchise and is expected to bring a complete visual overhaul and graphics upgrade.

In terms of overall sales, GTA 5 has reportedly sold almost 190 million units, which includes a rise of more than 5 million units from just the last quarter, making it the most successful Grand Theft Auto title in the franchise.

GTA 5 and GTA Online still bring in healthy revenue to the studio, which led many to speculate there might not even be another GTA title, as gamers have been treated to a plethora of additional content and holiday-themed events in GTA Online every year.

With the release of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles, Rockstar Games also released a GTA 5 Expanded and Enhanced Edition with highly improved visuals, faster loading times, haptic feedback, and a lot of other features that made use of the new-gen consoles.

GTA 6 is now expected to bring all those features and a lot more when it finally comes out, adding even more vehicles to the game with real-time rendering. The title might also not get released in older consoles and might just be exclusive to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles, with a heavy system-requirements list for PCs.

Rockstar Games is also working on mobile editions of their recently released Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition that included Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. There’s no release date for the mobile edition of the trilogy either but is expected to be released well before the next major Grand Theft Auto title.
