GTA 6 will be one of the greatest games of the current generation. Take-Two Interactive, the company that owns Rockstar, counts Grand Theft Auto as one of its key businesses. This giant of the industry made a deal with Embracer Group and just acquired Gearbox Entertainment, the creators of Borderlands, for almost 500 million dollars.
Gearbox confirmed this today through a social media post, expressing their joy at joining the 2K team. Embracer Group also sold more IPs, beginning a plan for restructuring the company.
Borderlands Creators, Gearbox Entertainment, Were Acquired by Take-Two Interactive, Owners of GTA 6
Embracer has acquired a ton of studios and companies and has been successful in managing almost all of them. Numerous of these studios were permanently closed for bad sales, and others are just being re-sold again because this investor group doesn’t know what to do.
This conglomerate has companies like THQ Nordic, which just released Alone in the Dark with almost null reception. Embracer Group just decided to make some changes, and various studies were sold; one of the chosen ones was Gearbox Entertainment, the creators of Borderlands.
For 460 million dollars, Take-Two Interactive, owners of GTA 6, has now acquired Gearbox, which could possibly mean a Borderlands and GTA 6 crossover. This acquisition was confirmed by Gearbox on its social media.

The studio seems very happy to join the 2K “family.” Aside from the corporate phrases, they really seem relieved to not be a part of Embracer Group. This is not the first investor group that really doesn’t know how to handle this kind of studio. Gearbox is not the only company that jump-started this sale.
Borderlands x GTA Online? One Can Certainly Hope
Take-Two Interactive has also acquired IPs like Duke Nuken, Brothers in Arms, Homeworld, Risk of Rain, and more. Some of these studios were working on highly anticipated games like Hyper Light Breaker or the Remnant franchise, which released a new entry a couple of months ago.
Embracer Group will probably sell more IPs or even entire studios to balance all the losses that have occurred in the last couple of years.
This could lead to a very interesting and very weird crossover, like the Borderlands skins or characters invading GTA Online in a limited-time event. With even some cell-shading models of the characters in the game or even a transformation into characters from the game.
Claptrap, one of the funniest characters in Borderlands, could be on some kind of multiplayer mission or heist for GTA Online. The possibilities are infinite, but especially very bizarre, something that players really love in this kind of title. The humor of Borderlands is definitely compatible with GTA.
At the moment, Take-Two Interactive is really focused on launching the most anticipated game of the decade with no more delays; GTA 6 is set to launch in 2025. But there are rumors that Rockstar Games will delay the game until 2026. This has to do with some problems in the development that the studio is having; there is no confirmation whatsoever.
