I wrote ‘Avatar’ which was a kitchen sink approach. It was not a smart approach. I just threw everything into it that I thought would be cool.”

In the same interview, the filmmaker mentioned that it took $250 million to produce the first film, and in order for the sequel to earn profit it would “have to be the third or fourth highest grossing film in history. That’s your threshold. That’s your break even.”

Although Cameron felt that he did not take a smart approach to Avatar, his idea was successful as it went on to become one of the most visually pleasing and stunning films, breaking the boundaries for visual effects and 3D technology.
