The world of anime has moved leaps ahead since its initial days in terms of animation and storylines. It has grown so much that the industry has gone global and has been attracting numbers that are bigger than most of the other media industries. Be it anime manga, or even live actions, the world of anime is moving forward with incredible speed.
Looking at the growth of the industry, it is predicted that anime would easily become one of the biggest industries in the world. However, this opinion is not shared by everyone, especially Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino who thinks that the anime industry will soon end if it follows the footsteps of other franchises like Disney.
Disney was cited by Tomino as an illustration of what occurs when animated films lose their soul. The Gundam creator was the first to criticize Disney for switching from hand-drawn animation to digital media. He also conceded that, although anime was in a kind of golden age if the industry followed Disney’s lead, it might all come to an end.
Yoshiyuki Tomino Thinks Excitement for Anime Will Soon Decline
During an interview with Toyokeizai, Gundam creator Tomino talked about how the anime industry is in its golden age however, he is unsure for how long this period will continue. He said:
“It is true that the anime industry is in a period of prosperity. However, it is unclear whether this situation will continue in the future. The excitement may continue for another five or six years, but by then it will probably start to decline. The same is true for novels and movies, but there are always ups and downs that occur with the changing times.”
According to Tomino, the excitement for anime will continue for another five or six years and then it will decline as has happened with other novels and movies. He stated that ups and downs always occur with changing times.

Yoshiyuki Tomino is Disappointed With Disney
While talking about the future decline of the anime industry, Tomino also criticized Disney and called their films disappointing. He also stated that if anime follows the footsteps of Disney, it would not produce any better work than their previous. He said:
“Anime itself will never disappear. However, I think it would be difficult to say that a better work than now will come out. After switching from hand-drawn animation to digital, many of Disney’s works became disappointing, but that’s how they end up being reproduced.”
He further said:
“It’s the same thing as the boring works produced by Disney’s digital production system today. A creative person must have a crazy side.”
