Hajime Isayama’s record-breaking anime has garnered many fans who love him for Attack on Titan but also hate him because so many major characters die. By the end of the series, only a select few Survey Corps members are alive among a plethora of loved ones.

In a 2023 interview, Hajime Isayama explained some of the decisions that led to the creation of Attack on Titan.

In an interview with Crunchyroll, Hajime Isayama revealed that the language spoken in Attack on Titan would be considered a universal language in their world. He further explains:

“You know, a good comparison in real life would be English, but it has to do with the history of oppression and colonization. The strongest language would become the universal language in that world.”

Marley is the strongest nation in Attack on Titan, but there are also other nations that are constantly at war with Marley due to the country’s greed and ambitions. From the enslavement of the Eldians, it can be inferred that Marley is a colonialist nation.

The language and culture of colonialist nations often get transferred to their colonies, thus spreading a universal language. Which is why Isayama gives English as an example. English-speaking nations have often colonialised other countries and spread their language, and now English is seen as a universal language for people to connect with each other.

While the world of Attack on Titan has regional languages, one language is bound to have more dominance, just like our real world.

What Would Eren Have Done if He Never Joined the Survey Corps?

According to Isayama, Eren would have lived a rotten” life had he not joined the Survey Corps.

“He would have an unfulfilling life, to be honest. And being inside of Paradis, he probably would have continued to be oppressed and possibly just extinct without anything he could do about it.”

Isayama also claims that had he not joined the Survey Corps, he would have lived without even knowing that his death would approach sooner than others. If he had never transformed into the Attack Titan, he could have even lived above the 13 year time limit.

In fact, he might not have inherited the Attack Titan because the Future Eren was the one who manipulated the events to inherit the Titan. Without the Future Eren, child Eren would not have existed, and vice versa. So it’s extremely difficult to predict how he would have lived.
