Attack on Titan Finale bid goodbye to the fans in an emotional farewell. Eren was killed by Mikasa Ackerman after he started the Rumbling and destroyed 80% of humanity. Hannes Is Directly Responsible To Eren’s Mom’s Death
Hannes was a member of the Scouts that used to kill Titans. When the Colossal Titan and the Armored Titan went on a rampage for the first time, the last wall was destroyed, and several Titans entered the Shiganshina district. During that time, several people died, and several houses were destroyed. Out of those houses was Eren’s house. During the destruction, Eren’s mother, Carla Jaeger, got stuck under the debris, and Eren and Mikasa tried their best to save her.
At that moment, one Titan approached them. To save Eren and Mikasa, his mother asked them to leave and save themselves. She told them that her legs were crushed and she could not run. Hannes was present at that time and, took Mikasa and Eren and ran away. But later, when the Titan picked her up and devoured her, it was seen that her legs were fine as she was struggling to free herself.
This situation stirred up the fans. They believed that Hannes could have saved Carla Jaeger. Hannes was an adult and could have helped the kids remove the debris to save Eren’s mother. She mentioned that her legs were crushed to save her kids, but if she was saved, she could have easily run away with them and be alive.

Hannes being a coward and not saving Eren’s mother definitely falls in the first category. It was years before the fans could see that Eren’s mother’s legs were functional due to the fact that the anime had ended, and the fans could scrutinize the facts properly. It is interesting to think how the story of Attack on Titan could follow a different path if Carla Jaeger were still alive. But it won’t be possible, thanks to Hannes.
