Harrison Ford Wasn’t Thrilled With His Indiana Jones Look

A main feature of Harrison Ford’s character Indiana Jones was the costume and appearance which became very popular with fans over the course of the films. But the Air Force One actor wasn’t too impressed with the comfort level of the attire which proved to be very cumbersome along with the various accessories that the character was given. Ford’s costume included a leather jacket, a bullwhip, and a pinch-front fedora that he stapled to his head during production so that it would not fly off during action scenes. Recalling his discomfort with the outfit and accessories, Ford said,

“My questions about it were many. Why am I wearing a leather jacket in the jungle? Isn’t it hot here? Why am I carrying a whip? What am I going to do with a f*****g whip? I’m going to whip people?”

The costume department then gave Ford a detailed explanation for all his questions including the reason for the hat and the whip which brought back memories and reflections of a past time. Ford who was then convinced that this was the best look for the character, accepted to wear everything that was given to him which ultimately made the film memorable.

During one of the action set pieces, Indiana Jones is seen riding a horse through the streets of New York City. As he was finishing up filming the scene, Ford felt the hands of three stunt workers holding him from below while he was still on horseback to protect him from falling off while dismounting. An irritated Ford who wanted an organic take wanted none of it.

“And I said, ‘Leave me the f**k alone…Leave me alone, I’m an old man getting off a horse and I want it to look like that!”’

Ford went on to add that the Indiana Jones franchise was extremely important to him having invested many years playing the beloved character on screen. The star expressed his hope that the films will stand the test of time and go down as one of Hollywood’s greatest franchises.
