During the press rounds for the latest installment in the Indiana Jones franchise, the actor portraying the eponymous protagonist made it crystal clear that the fifth film would bring an end to his thrilling escapades as the daredevil archaeologist. Apparently not though, since there still seems to be room for Ford to reprise the classic role in yet another Indy Jones movie.

Indiana Jones 6 – James Mangold Hints at Harrison Ford’s Return

Indiana Jones 5 was slated to mark Harrison Ford‘s last run as the legendary Indy Jones and the 80-year-old actor had himself announced his retirement plan, claiming how he’d be stepping down from the role after the latest addition in the action/adventure series. But towards the end of Dial of Destiny, Ford’s titular hero is seen picking up his famous hat from a clothesline, seemingly indicating that Indy might not be done embarking on electrifying ventures after all. Not only that, but it also seems to be hinting toward the leading man’s return in a potential Indiana Jones 6.

To add fuel to the fire of fan theories and potential outcomes, James Mangold, the director who shepherded Indiana Jones 5 has also allegedly confirmed that Indy Jones is in fact not done with his daring enterprises.

“I don’t think he’ll ever stop digging. And when he takes the hat off the clothesline, I think it’s because, first of all, you shouldn’t put hats on clotheslines. And second of all, no, I don’t think he’s done […] I think he’ll wake up tomorrow and want to do something.”

He might have retired as a teacher in Indiana Jones 5, but he’ll always remain a serial treasure hunter at heart. That being said, Ford could very well come back for yet another bold journey into the wild, but the question is, would he want to? “This is the final film in the series, and this is the last time I’ll play the character,” the Raiders of the Lost Ark star told Total Film magazine in an interview. But who knows, maybe he has a surprise in store for the fans or something of the sort.

Could Another Actor Replace Him in A New Indy Jones Movie?

While Mangold seems to be of the firm belief that Indiana Jones isn’t done with adventures, Ford’s last entry as the character seems to be clashing with the former’s vision. But if you’re wondering whether the common ground, in this case, could be bringing in another actor to depict the beloved Indy, then rest assured, no such thing will be happening anytime soon.

Back in May last year, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy herself attested to the fact that they would “never make Indiana Jones without Harrison Ford,” as she emphasized the importance of not recasting the epic swashbuckler in the franchise while talking to Vanity Fair. “Harrison is so specific and so unique to creating this role. We just… Steven [Spielberg] agrees, we just wouldn’t do that,” she promised.

Regardless, Mangold’s cryptic message following Dial of Destiny does seem to have raised numerous eyebrows, especially in terms of what that means for Ford. But only time will tell whether the rumors are true or not.
