From stars like Daniel Radcliffe as the titular protagonist to Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in the roles of Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, everyone made an impact. But what we should all be grateful for is the fact that David Thewlis wasn’t selected to play Quirinus Quirrell in the first film of the franchise, otherwise, it could’ve been disastrous.

While Daniel Radcliffe‘s performance as The Boy Who Lived became synonymous with his name, there were several other stars that immortalized themselves in their characters in the franchise. Apart from the trinity of Harry, Hermione, and Ron, characters like Severus Snape and Albus Dumbledore are also fondly remembered by many to this day.

While all of them played a significant role in Potter’s development, only a few could do as much as Remus Lupin could. But as perfect as David Thewlis was for this role, his contributions could’ve gone to another character entirely, which could’ve spelled doom for the franchise at the end.

Before being selected as Professor of Defence Against The Dark Arts, Thewlis had previously auditioned for the role of Quirinus Quirrell in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The character of Professor Quirrell was just as forgettable as he was terrifying, especially after removing his headgear, which was on purpose. Since he wasn’t a major player in the grand scheme of things, he was not to be taken too seriously other than the introduction to villainy. Nonetheless, Ian Hart played the role to perfection throughout the film.

But if the role had gone to the Dragonheart star, it would’ve meant he could never return to the franchise in the future. Seeing just how amazing he was in the caring fatherly figure role in the next films, it would’ve been a tragedy to lose him for such an important role this early on in the series.
