The 96th Oscar Awards ceremony’s shortlists in ten categories have been revealed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Not only are fifteen films advancing in the live-action, animated, and documentary short-film categories, but also in the competitions for international feature films, documentaries, original songs, and music scores.
Today, ten films advanced in each of the three categories: sound, visual effects, and makeup and hairstyling. Godzilla Minus One, Takashi Yamazaki’s new film in TOHO’s Godzilla franchise, has been shortlisted for the Visual Effects category and this is the first time a Japanese film has made the shortlist for the Visual Effects award at the Academy Awards.
Also, Joe Hisaishi’s original score for Hayao Miyazaki’s film The Boy and the Heron is on the shortlist for the Music (Original Score) category. This is truly a great achievement for Godzilla minus one and especially for The Boy and The Heron as no anime films received nominations at the 95th Academy Awards.
Godzilla Minus One Nominated For Visual Effects Category
The movie Godzilla Minus One has been a huge hit at the box office, surpassing expectations in nearly every way, and it has received mostly favorable responses from critics. The recently released film, which was directed by Takashi Yamazaki, is a stand-alone production instead of a part of Legendary Pictures’ Monsterverse.
The massive monster makes a reappearance in the wake of World War II, which may be the worst possible time for the attack. This gives a unique spin to the series. Toho is the production company behind the creation of the titular kaiju. With over $70.7 million in box office receipts worldwide to date, Godzilla Minus One has had an incredibly successful run.
For the first time, a Japanese film has made it onto the Academy Awards shortlist for Best Visual Effects. This comes after Godzilla Minus One took home the Florida Film Critics Association’s Best VFX award. Additionally, the movie has received nominations for Best Foreign Film, Best Visual Effects, and Best Film from the North Carolina Film Critics Association.
The Boy and The Heron is Nominated for Music (Original Score) Category
The Boy and the Heron tells the tale of Mahito Maki, a young soldier in the Pacific War, who, following the death of his mother, finds an abandoned tower in his new town and ventures into a magical realm inhabited by a talking grey heron.
Joe Hisaishi’s original score for Hayao Miyazaki’s anime film The Boy and the Heron has been shortlisted for the 96th Academy Awards in the Music (Original Score) category. Except for one film, he has composed the music for Hayao Miyazaki’s films, and the two have been connected since 1984.
The movie has made over $118 million in box office revenue worldwide and has garnered positive reviews from critics. It received numerous nominations, including nominations for Best Animated Feature Film and Best Original Score at the Golden Globes.
