The satirical psychological horror American Psycho was released in 2000. Set in Manhattan during the late 1980s Wall Street boom, the film follows the story of a wealthy man named Patrick Bateman who works as an investment banker in Manhattan.
When the film was released in 2000, it shot Christian Bale to fame and cemented Patrick Bateman as an iconic character. There were times when people used to look up to him as the role model. And all those gym fanatics were obsessed with getting Bateman’s sinewy body.
It’s nearly impossible to imagine anyone other than Bale as Patrick Bateman, but fans believe there’s an actor who can pull it off. Now, with talks of a remake of American Psycho underway, it’s Tom Holland who is receiving strong backing from fans to play the lead role.

According to ever-reliable industry insider, @TheInsneider, Lionsgate is diving headfirst into the modern-day remakes with none other than American Psycho.
People genuinely believe that Tom Holland could convincingly play the role of Patrick Bateman. They think it could help change the perception some have of him as just a nerdy 17-year-old. Check out the post that said so:

In 2021, Lionsgate TV chairman Kevin Beggs confirmed a TV adaptation of the cult classic film is in development. Though he did not provide many details. Here’s what he said in an interview with Deadline:
“We’ve just wrapped up Dear White People which was a really good experience, Blindspotting is coming up, American Psycho is in development. We’re always exploring what we can do in television with something like the Saw franchise, so that’s a conversation.”
Sneider might also be referring to a TV adaptation only. Regardless of whether it’s confirmed or not, fans aren’t too keen on the idea of a remake.
Fans Certainly Aren’t Happy About the American Psycho‘s Remake
While the studio might be considering remaking the 2000 adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 novel, but fans already seem unhappy about it (based on their online reactions to the update). Check out some fan reactions:

I got an idea.
Don't do it!
Create a new thing in the vein of it. FFS they'll just reinvent it for "modern audiences" we don't need or want that.— TheMovieNerd (@leemour84) February 24, 2024
Though this isn’t the first time. Audiences also didn’t like the movie American Psycho 2, starring Michael Kremko as Patrick Bateman, which came out in 2002.
So, it’s clear – Patrick Bateman fans don’t like movies trying to piggyback on the original’s success. Per them, it might not be worth the effort to associate with it.
