Arnold Schwarzenegger Talks about his Childhood with his Father

Born in Austria, Arnold Schwarzenegger did not have it easy growing up as his strict parents believed in tough love. His father, Gustav Schwarzenegger, was physically abusive and was an alcoholic. He preferred Schwarzenegger’s brother, Meinhard over him. His father was also a police chief and a stern Catholic who was rigid in his ways. He also apparently played a role in World War II as a member of the Nazi party.

“My goal was to not have people go that direction, so it would be a good idea to be straightforward and say: “Look, my previous generation were Nazis. The people I grew up with were Nazis.” Generations can be different. I don’t need to do the same things my dad did. I don’t need to be prejudiced. I don’t need to be an alcoholic. I don’t need to beat my kids. I can make a break. That’s why I started bodybuilding and came over here. I wanted to make clear that the other way loses all the time and creates misery; love and inclusion brings happiness.” Stated Schwarzenegger during his interview with the Hollywood Reporter.

The star went on to talk about how his struggle has made him stronger, unlike his brother who he further talks about later in the interview.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Talks About his Brother Who Died in a Drunk Driving Incident

The actor talked about his brother, Meinhard Schwarzenegger, who he was not very close with. He talked about how the two were opposites in everything. The star believes his brother to be fragile for falling into a similar pattern to his father and becoming an alcoholic resulting in his death in a drunk driving accident.

“Well, look at my brother [Meinhard]. We were opposites. He was more fragile. He got the same treatment and became an alcoholic and died drunk driving. What tore him down built me up. It goes back to Nietzsche: What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger — and he got killed.” Arnold Schwarzenegger stated.

The actor went on to talk about how he looks at his childhood in a positive light. He thinks of it as a good thing as it made him want to leave his home at 18 and start a new life. He believes that it is better to be positive about experiences rather than negative.

Fubar is to premiere on Netflix on May 25, 2023
