While fans want Evans to return to his role for the upcoming Avengers 5, the actor seems to be done with the character for a while. However, he did not rule out the possibility of returning to the MCU as a whole, as he expressed his desire to play Johnny Storm again. The actor had previously played the role in Fox’s Fantastic Four, which starred Jessica Alba.

Chris Evans has been synonymous with the role of Captain America in the MCU. The actor was propelled to worldwide fame when he was cast as the popular Marvel comic character in Captain America: The First Avenger. The actor then reprised the role in the Captain America trilogy and the Avengers films, while also appearing in short cameos in other MCU films.

Evans departed from the role of Steve Rogers after his appearance in Avengers: Endgame. He exited the role along with Robert Downey Jr., who played Iron Man. Rogers received a great end to his character arc as he travels back in time to return the Infinity Stones to their original places and chooses to grow old with Peggy Carter. He also hands over the shield to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson.

Since his departure, fans have been clamoring for another appearance from the OG Avengers. Though many heroes since the beginning of the MCU are expected to show up in Avengers 5, Chris Evans seems to be uninterested in reprising his role as the star-spangled hero. He mentioned to The View,

“You know, I always see those reports too, and it’s news to me. I think every couple of months, someone says that they’re getting Downey, Hemsworth, and Scarlet, and everyone’s coming back! No one’s spoken to me about it. And look, I would never say never, but I really — I’m very protective. It’s a very precious role to me, so it would have to be just right.”

Evans has mentioned on multiple occasions that he did not want to mess with the perfect ending the character received in Endgame and hence, would not want anything to go wrong. However, fans have seen instances of actors returning to a role despite a perfect ending, with one example being Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine even after Logan.

While Chris Evans has been apprehensive about taking back the Captain America shield, he has an idea of how he could return to the MCU. Before making his MCU debut in Captain America: The First Avenger, Evans had already bagged a Marvel role in Fox’s Fantastic Four, where he played Johnny Storm a.k.a the Human Torch.

While the film and its sequel were a commercial success, the Tim Story duology never received critical appreciation. The Fantastic Four reboot by filmmaker Josh Trank received even worse reviews. Now, the team will finally make its MCU debut in Matt Shakman’s The Fantastic Four, which sees Joseph Quinn take on the role of the Human Torch.

Chris Evans mentioned to MTV News earlier that he would love to get another chance at portraying Johnny Storm as he never got the glory he deserved. He said,

“Wouldn’t that be great? No one’s ever come to me about that. I mean, I don’t exactly look the same anymore. That was 15, almost 20 years ago. But I really love that character…Johnny Storm, I feel like he didn’t really get his day. That was before Marvel really found its footing. So, I loved that role and, you know, who knows.”

While The Fantastic Four has its cast sorted, the existence of the multiverse in the MCU lends numerous possibilities. John Krasinski already played the role of a multiversal variant of Mr. Fantastic in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Chris Evans could potentially play such a variant in one of the MCU films too.
