Talk no Jutsu is one of the most legendary moves that Naruto can attempt. You can bring the most evil and twisted villains, and this technique can help them change their entire lives and worldview by just talking it out. Masashi Kishimoto himself confirmed that it is the most powerful jutsu, and is inspired by his therapist who performed a Talk no Jutsu exorcism on him.

In an interview with Kobayashi, Kishimoo admitted that from the Pain arc onwards Naruto only defeated enemies using this technique. He had no intent to kill and always settled things verbally. However, this procedure began to feel more and more non-shounen-like, so the author had to take a decision to end the reign of Naruto’s verbal soothings.

As Kishimoto felt that the plot was getting boring, he decided to introduce one of the most controversial jutsus, Edo Tensei. This jutsu binds the soul of a dead person with that of a living vessel. This restored the souls as they were in their last moments of life, and they would have to live by their summoner’s bidding.

Some of the characters revived by Edo Tensei are Hashirama Senju, Hiruzen Sarutobi, Minato Kamikaze, and Tobirama Senju. These extremely powerful people, once resurrected, became a force to reckon and were a challenge to defeat in Naruto. They had to be destroyed at all costs because controlled souls would not respond to Talk no Jutsu.

Since plenty of powerful and important characters were summoned via Edo Tensei, it led to fans questioning about other characters who were neglected. Kobayashi himself asked about the characters which never returned like Jiraiya, Konan and Hidan. Given that Jiraiya was an important character in Naruto’s life, fans expected him to return, but Kishimoto has a firm answer for everyone.

According to the author, he didn’t want Jiraiya to return, because he wouldn’t have been able to write it in a good way.

Jiraiya’s death was a big part of Naruto’s development and brought him closer to understanding Sasuke’s feelings, so bringing Jiraiya back would undo that.

After Jiraiya’s death, Naruto was able to feel he loss of a father figure and teacher. This was the moment when he could have chosen the path of revenge like Sasuke, but did not. That’s what set Naruto apart from Sasuke and many other Shonen protagonists.

The author admitted that Edo Tensei was invented mostly to bring out Madara into the story. So Jiraiya’s return was never probable.
