Apple TV+’s upcoming show Dark Matter is one of the most anticipated shows which is on the verge of release. Based on the story of an expert in astrophysics, the show sees the choices of people and how they lead to consequences that they aren’t prepared for (well, we rarely are).
With iconic actor Joel Edgerton portraying the lead role of Jason Dessen in the series, there was a certain aspect of humanity in the character. In an interview, the executive producers of Dark Matter praised Edgerton for deviating from the original book and making his character more human!
There Are No Villains In Dark Matter, Only Bad Choices!
The first thing that sets this show apart from other shows is that there are no villains in the story, per se. With characters making choices and facing the consequences of their actions, Dark Matter feels like the TV version of the PlayStation game Until Dawn (minus the Wendigos).
Based on the the book Dark Matter by Blake Crouch, the story is about an expert in astrophysics who tries to untangle the mystery behind dark matter and in turn, gets deeper into the mystery. With an intriguing storyline and the brilliant acting of Joel Edgerton in the mix, the show feels like a fresh series. In an interview with ScreenRant+, the executive producers of the show Blake Crouch & Matt Tolmach praised Joel Edgerton for essentially bringing the humanity of his character into the spotlight.
“Full credit to Joel [Edgerton] who was always of the mind that Jason II [his on-screen character] is not a villain. He’s much more of a villain in the book than he is in the show. I kind of cringe a little bit because I know how that last scene is written [in the book]. Very different in the show and that’s because of Joel.”
He further continued,
“He found the humanity of Jason II and it makes him such a more dimensional character and when you make him dimensional, then it does that trick of showing you that all of these versions of Jason are just the same entity with these slight little deviations based on the choices we have made”
For those of you who may be unfamiliar with Joel Edgerton, the actor is famous for starring alongside Tom Hardy in the 2011 film Warrior. Talking about the pain that he and Hardy endured, Edgerton once talked about what it was like filming Warrior and how his co-star Tom Hardy has been doing much better in Jiu-Jitsu and other forms of martial arts now!
When Tom Hardy And Joel Edgerton Were Beat Up Together!
Back in 2011, Edgerton and Hardy were co-stars who used to get beat up (sometimes literally) while filming Warrior. In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Edgerton talked about his time while filming Warrior and how he doesn’t train anymore but praised Hardy for his skills!
“No, I haven’t been doing any of the MMA. I’ve been doing a little bit of boxing – but that’s nothing compared to Tom Hardy. He’s doing jujitsu tournaments now!”
He further continued,
“Strangely, in the film, his character actually wasn’t so much into that side of things, but now he’s doing a lot more of it. For me, whilst I do box, I’m more into gentle things these days.”
Well, to each their own. Starring alongside Jennifer Connelly, and several others, Edgerton’s upcoming show has received great early reviews and people are excited for it.
The upcoming AppleTV+ show Dark Matter is slated for a release date of 8 May 2024 in the U.S. and will be available to stream on Apple TV+ in the U.S.
