Being the only female lead in the iconic Star Wars franchise’s main timeline in the past, it was inevitable that Carrie Fisher would become the biggest actress of her generation after the release of the first film. While she did get her fame for portraying Princess Leia, the sheer exceptional performance she delivered was worthy of the hype she generated.
But the aforementioned franchise wasn’t the only talking point about her professional career. In fact, she was also known as a celebrated author who dabbled in literary works along with several films. One movie in particular will always remain in her mind, as Blues Brothers was the film where she almost choked to death and got engaged with her then-boyfriend Dan Aykroyd.
How Carrie Fisher Got Engaged On The Sets Of Blues Brothers After Almost Dying
While the Star Wars trilogies may have been the highlights of her career, Carrie Fisher also operated beyond the realm of the film industry. Most notable of her literary endeavors was Postcards from the Edge, which was a book that she wrote from her personal life experiences. Apart from that, she also had an acting career that didn’t involve the cinematic universe.
During the filming of one such project, titled Blues Brothers, the actress got engaged to her then-boyfriend and actor Dan Aykroyd because she had a near-death experience of choking on some food.

In a past interview with The Chicago Tribune, the Late actress opened up about her brief engagement to Aykroyd. She opened up about the time they both were sitting in their trailer and the actor was trying to get her something to eat since she was a little thin back then. While she was eating, the food got lodged in her throat and she began to gag.
At first, Aykroyd thought she was laughing, but soon he found out that it was not the case. Then once she was out of danger, he proposed to her. She said:
“On Blues Brothers, [Dan Aykroyd] proposed in the trailer on set. He was forcing me to eat because I was very thin in those days — no longer — and I inhaled a Brussels sprout, and I started choking. He thought I was laughing, and then he saw that I was dying. And he did the Heimlich maneuver, and then like 10 minutes later he asked me to marry him. I thought, ‘I better marry him. What if that happens again?’ We had rings, we got blood tests, the whole shot.”
But their engagement didn’t last, as they broke their relationship, and Fisher returned to a relationship with Paul Simon.

What Was Blues Brothers About?
The film tells the tale of two brothers, among whom Jake Blues has just been released from prison, and calls upon his brother Elwood. They soon found out that the orphanage they grew up in was on the verge of shutting down.
They figure out that if they can pay $5,000 in taxes before the time for closure arrives, they can save it, and the only way they know how is to bring back their old band together. As they play one gig after the other, they receive the money necessary but also get unwanted attention from people who will stand in their way to save their orphanage.
