Carrie Fisher had a difficult relationship with her mother, but that did not stop Debbie Reynolds from protecting her daughter and warding off potential suitors. Despite her strict rules, the Star Wars actress still pursued a romance with co-star Harrison Ford.
Fisher’s mother was a renowned celebrity, and she would have been living behind her shadow if she had not found her own niche in the industry. Thinking she wouldn’t escape from Reynolds’ fame, Fisher had to stay away from her.
Debbie Reynolds Was Against Carrie Fisher Having Relationship With Co-Stars
As a mother, Debbie Reynolds was wary of Carrie Fisher’s co-stars in films. When the young actress was cast in the 1975 film Shampoo, her mother had to make sure she wouldn’t develop any relationship with Warren Beatty, who was Fisher’s lover in the movie.
Todd Fisher, Carrie’s brother and a director, shared with The Times what Reynolds said to Beatty, “If you touch her, I will take out a hit on you.” He explained this further in his book My Girls (via Page Six):
“He said, ‘Your mother looked at me, and she said, ‘If you touch my daughter, I will have you 86ed — you know, eight miles out, six feet down.’ He knew what that meant, ‘cause that was the old mafia term… He was like, ‘No problem, Debbie.’ And he never touched Carrie.”
Despite Reynolds’ warning, the young actress would later develop a three-month long affair with Harrison Ford while filming for the first Star Wars installment which was released in 1977. She kept this secret until her 2017 memoir was published. The director further wrote:
“They had an impetuous affair, and I was aware of it — not in any huge detail because it wasn’t that big of a thing. It wasn’t like it was such an ongoing thing. But Carrie had sworn me to secrecy on it, and no one had ever said anything to my mother.”
According to Todd Fisher, the Star Wars actress was willing to reveal her relationship with Ford in the book, which Reynolds did not approve of. She thought nobody would care since it was a long time ago. Later on, when the story came out, the actress admitted she regrets the decision.
Carrie Fisher Accused Warren Beatty Of Misconduct During Filming
In a 1991 interview with Madonna via Rolling Stone, Carrie Fisher revealed Warren Beatty’s inappropriate behavior towards her. She revealed to the singer, who once dated the actor, that he asked her four times to have s*x:
“At the time, I was 17 and making Shampoo. He offered to relieve me of the huge burden of my virginity. Four times. That was the big offer. I decided against it. I decided for reality over anecdote.”
Beatty did not make any comments about this allegation, though he only said he loved Fisher, and it was a huge loss when she passed away in 2016.
