When Henry Cavill’s spy-thriller Argylle was announced, fans and critics had big expectations from it. Many were excited to see Cavill’s quest to reclaim his career after being ousted from the role of Superman and leaving The Witcher series. However, since we all know how spectacularly and quickly it all went down, Cavill has nonetheless other projects lined up to use as stepping stones.

Yet, seeing the future slate of one of the most revered actors in Hollywood is somewhat of a disappointment. There is no doubt that Cavill is indeed an incredible actor with a remarkable acting range. But after being in projects like Immortal, and The Witcher, his choosing to work in projects like Highlander reboot and a Warhammer 40k series seems like he is willingly choosing to fall deep into a stereotyped rabbit hole.

One of the most remarkable actors of the contemporary age, Henry Cavill is a fan favorite. From his dapper looks to his down-to-earth personality, there are numerous reasons to like him. However, when it comes to his career, the actor has lately been a disappointment.

After his shocking exit from The Witcher and the DC Universe, fans were understandably expecting bigger things from the actor but instead, they got Argylle. But what is more disappointing is his future projects, namely the Highlander reboot and Warhammer 40k series.

In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Cavill remarked that while he cannot speak about the project, Highlander will be more than just a cool guy with a sword. His statement and choice of projects only prove one thing, that the actor is willingly going down the Stereotype Rabbit Hole.

After starring in projects like Immortal, Man of Steel, and The Witcher, his future projects are a repetition of the same theme. All revolving around the archetype of a tragic warrior-esque character burdened under the weight of their destinies, his past and future characters all share a similar dynamic.

Despite being an impeccable actor, he has been leaning too much on the fantasy-thriller-action genre, which certainly prompts questions like—is it a rabbit hole of his own making or has he been forced to take that path? While it is more likely to be his choice, yet, it would be far too early and wrong to hail him as a stereotype!

Why Typecasting Henry Cavill Is Wrong!

The audience has pretty much gotten accustomed to seeing Cavill in roles with a similar tragic archetype, and it does pretty much suit him well. And so while there might be expectations to see him continue playing similar roles, it would still be wrong to label him as typecast.

This is because while many of Cavill’s roles fall within the fantasy and action genre, each of his characters is different. Even his upcoming Highlander character won’t be as same as Warhammer 40k, since both are miles apart. As far as his past roles are considered, while Superman is a comic book character, Geralt is straight-up from an extensive literary fictional work, two characters that share little similarities other than their genre.

Furthermore, seeing his physicality and knack for such roles, even fans and filmmakers might prefer him to star in the same genre. Even though his future projects may be aligned with his past projects, Cavill himself has expressed his desire to star in such roles, as he revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

Cavill might have starred in similar roles, but each role showcased a different side of him. While in Man of Steel, he was the noble and powerful savior of the human race, he was just as brooding, cynical, and stoic as Geralt. So while judging from above he may be perceived as a typecast, the actor has consistently shown a wide range of versatility, depth, and complexity in every role he has taken.

Henry Cavill’s latest Argylle is in theatres now.
