The new series in conversation is the much-awaited Marvel’s Echo that had been making the rounds of being released somewhere as early as next year. The trailer for the upcoming show just dropped, which showcases Alaqua Cox as the titular protagonist. We first met the leader of the Tracksuit Mafia in MCU’s previous show Hawkeye, where actress Alaqua Cox showed her abilities as Maya Lopez, leaving Clint Barton both surprised and baffled. Making a strong impression on the public through her performance, it’s no wonder they are excited to see what the character has in store for us with her upcoming Echo Disney+ show.

But there are some changes that the series will be making with the release of the show, and the biggest one is the change in her powers.

In a recent press conference for the upcoming series (via Variety), director Sydney Freeland, the one who will be helming the project, stated that the show will have two major changes with Lopez’s character. The first one would be the change in her origin, she would now belong to the Choctaw tribe from Oklahoma, where she previously belonged to the Blackfeet tribe.

The second one would be the change of her power of Photo Reflexes, where she copies the mannerisms and actions of her opponent by just looking at them, like Taskmaster from Black Widow. Freeland said:

“Her power in the comic books is that she can copy anything, any movement, any whatever. It’s kind of lame, I will say, that is not her power. I’ll just kind of leave it at that.”

While she did not mention what exactly Lopez’s powers will be, reports claim that Maya will be empowered by the Choctaw women who came before her. She will have several different abilities that manifest when she’s threatened. Each power belongs to a different ancestor (via GameRant).

When we look at what we know about Maya Lopez, the substantial information regarding her past and present comes from the pages of Marvel Comics.

In the comics, Lopez is an orphan whose father was killed by The Kingpin Wilson Fisk. As his last dying wish, her father requests Fisk to take care of his daughter, which he upholds as he raises her Maya like his own daughter. Then, coming to the MCU, we see Lopez leading the Tracksuit Mafia under Kingpin’s command.
