In 2009, Cyrus and Hemsworth started dating on and off while filming The Last Song. They announced their engagement in June of 2012. But they decided to end their romance in September 2013. Nevertheless, they tied the knot on December 23, 2018, rekindling their romance and bringing love back. Sadly, this followed their second separation after announcing their divorce on August 10, 2019, and reaching a final settlement on January 28, 2020.

Millions of people still remember the tumultuous relationship that Hemsworth had with Cyrus. Given the emotional devastation their on-and-off-again relationship left behind, it makes sense that the former would still be carrying some wounds. Thus making it hard for him to commit to his current partner.

That being said, the Hemsworth family has publicly stated that the actor and Brooks should get married. The source added:

“They adore Gabriella and have been telling Liam it’s normal to have ups and downs. They hope he’ll make his move over Christmas!”

In 2012, following three years of intermittent relationship, Hemsworth proposed to Cyrus with a 3.5-carat ring crafted by Neil Lane. At the time, Cyrus told PEOPLE:

“I’m so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam.”

The split was announced by Cyrus on August 10, 2019. Hemsworth announced his divorce eleven days later, citing “irreconcilable differences” (as per PEOPLE). Their divorce became legally final on January 28, 2020.

Miley Cyrus revealed to Seventeen magazine (via MTV News) in November 2009, before The Last Song was released, that she was very close to Liam Hemsworth. Although they were not exactly confirmed to be dating yet, she said of the actor:

“I’ve never gotten along with anyone so well. We’ve decided that any type of relationship that we have, we will always just keep it very DL [on the down low]. First and foremost, we are best friends, so that’s what I tell people all the time.”

During an interview in March 2010 with Teen Vogue, Cyrus openly expressed her admiration for Hemsworth, saying:

“I think we’re both deeper than normal people — what they think and how they feel. He’s very grateful for what he has, but he doesn’t let it go to his head. I’m like that, too. It’s refreshing to work with an actor who isn’t also a singer and dancer and musician and artist and this and that. I’m sick of quadruple threats.”

In a September 2020 podcast episode of Joe Rogan Experience, Cyrus discussed her highly publicized divorce.

“I recently just went through a very public divorce that f—ing s*cked. What really s*cked about it wasn’t the fact that me and someone that I loved realize that we don’t love each other the way that we used to anymore. That’s OK. I can accept that. I can’t accept the villainizing and all of those stories.”

Their painful split could potentially overshadow Hemsworth’s budding romance with Gabriella Brooks. Nonetheless, there is still hope for them to create a future together through reflection, healing, and honest communication.
