Hideo Kojima has directed masterpieces across the years and certainly is an authority when it comes to quality story-telling, and occasionally sharing his two cents when it comes to movies, his recent one-sentence review with Madame Web speaks volumes about how he feels about the movie despite having a strong relationship with Sony. The quality of superhero movies has taken quite a tumble, and Kojima, an advocate of cinema, didn’t have anything to say at all about the latest entry of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

The moment Sony announced that they would capitalize and build their cinematic universe about Spider-Man characters but not even having him around, it was a ticking time bomb. Their films are either mediocre like Venom and his underwhelming sequel or plain bad like Morbius, and it would be criminal to not mention Madame Web in this category. Sony may have cracked the formula for creating triple-A games with PlayStation Studios, but they keep dropping the ball with their movies.

Hideo Kojima’s Brief Review of Madame Web Speaks Volumes

Madame Web couldn't predict Hideo Kojima's review for the film.

The Japanese visionary makes video games, including the famous Metal Gear series that redefined the action-stealth genre and after spending years with Konami, he set out to gain independence and freedom to create his original worlds. Sony offered a hand through a partnership to develop his first new IP: Death Stranding. Despite being hugely backed by Sony, Kojima didn’t hold back with his honest review of their movie.

Unsurprisingly, the length of his reviews on X correlates to the level of how much he enjoyed a film. He once posted a review for Marvel’s Studios Moon Knight which is exclusively streaming on Disney+, which was a mouthful and an indication of how much he enjoyed the show and even hopes to see more of him in the future.

The director favors quality above anything else, and the consensus about the film based on reactions and reviews from various outlets and regular people, Madame Web is bad. This isn’t surprising at all, riding off the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe gave them the misplaced confidence to replicate it without the main hero in their shared universe, and no one even asked what could go wrong before committing these actors to a doomed franchise.

Sony’s Madame Web Didn’t Impress Kojima

Hideo Kojima will show Sony how to make a decent movie with his latest project that is very much like a feature film than it is a video game: Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.

Perhaps Sony filmmakers and producers should take notes from the visionary’s masterclass on how to make an immersive and compelling project. Kojima is a huge film enthusiast and his recent works have shown that.

Kojima is a fan too just like anyone else and has the right to express his opinion in any way possible no matter how short or long or even how direct he can be. What are your thoughts about Madame Web? Share your thoughts below!
