The idea of a “Soulslike” game comes from the series that is of course Dark Souls Developed by FromSoftware. Many fans of the Dark Souls series consider Dark Souls 2 as the black sheep of the family. This is because the game is often seen as not fitting well with the rest of the series. To make things worse, Mr. Miyazaki, the director of the previous games, wasn’t involved in the directing of Dark Souls 2. As a result, some of the creative decisions made about the game feel out of place and make it look like it does not belong to the Dark Souls series.

According to a recent interview with IGN, the renowned game creator stated that he considers Dark Souls 2 to be a “great project”. He also added:

Without it, we wouldn’t have had many of the connections and ideas that were carried forward to the rest of the series.

Although some fans of the series may not like to admit it, many ideas from Dark Souls 2 have been incorporated into FromSoftware’s more recent games, especially Elden Ring.

Does Hidetaka Miyazaki regret not directing Dark Souls 2?

Mr. Miyazaki also defended the two directors in charge of Dark Souls 2 adding the comment:

We were able to have that different impetus and have those different ideas… that we otherwise might not have had.

Miyazaki even hinted at delegating future Souls games to other directors seemingly having faith that the diversity other directors offer is the right way forward for the series.

It may not come as a surprise to some fans, but Hidetaka Miyazaki’s positive remarks about the fan-dividing game are well-deserved. Although he did not directly direct the game, he played a supervisory role in its production. Therefore, it is expected that he would be proud of its influence on games such as Sekiro and Elden Ring.

However there is some level of regret it seems as Hidetaka Miyazaki also commented that maybe stepping away from being a director was not for him as he comments he enjoys “a lot of projects where I am director, so I think a supervisor role for me is just something I’m not used to and just is maybe not quite a good fit.” and described the experience of being a supervisor as “one little area of regret” so maybe the idea of asking other game creators to direct in the future may not be for him.
