Director Hideo Kojima has been hailed as the auteur of video games and earned the respect of the gaming community and his colleagues within the industry. Working on games is not for the faint of heart but Kojima finds satisfaction in delivering complex narratives with a deep connection to humanity.
The director has contributed greatly to the game industry, recognized the work of others throughout his career, and given them their fair share of the spotlight. Kojima’s humility is among his strongest character attributes and not once did he think of himself as above others making the director more endearing.
Director Hideo Kojima Is One of the Most Humblest Game Developers Alive
The director has done plenty after he parted ways with Konami and the gaming community has high expectations for Hideo Kojima’s next project: Death Stranding 2: On the Beach which is scheduled to be released sometime next year on the PlayStation 5. The original game initially received mixed reviews and public opinion shifted over time which is a testament to the director’s creative vision.
Kojima celebrated the 7th anniversary of his studio and sat down for an interview to discuss how branching out independently allowed him to explore ideas he could not while working in his previous company.
In my experience, I always end up telling creators I meet to be their own producer. You can’t make what you want otherwise. Directors I know in the film business, such as Nicholas Winding Refn and Guillermo del Toro, they both produce their own movies. Yes, you should of course find a good producer who understands your proposals, but it’s not that easy.
He further stated:
When I create in particular, I think it’s best for me to manage the business side of things too, including promotion. I think there aren’t many people like that in the Japanese games industry these days, although I’d say Mr. Miyazaki [of FromSoftware] is out there working hard.
Kojima gave credit to director Hidetaka Miyazaki, a fellow Japanese game director and CEO of FromSoftware that primarily works on Soulslike games, and recognized that there are not a lot of Japanese game developers out there. Miyazaki’s style of game development is distinctly different from Kojima’s, however, each of their projects appealed to the gaming community.
The director also credited other creatives he met in his career like directors from the film industry. Kojima’s greatest asset is his collaborative nature and has established a strong foundation of friends outside and within the game industry. Notable directors were seen at the offices of Kojima Productions and fans speculate they will have a minor role in the Death Stranding sequel.
Director Hidetaka Miyazaki Struck Gold With the Soulslike Genre
Miyazaki often admits that he and his team would reflect on the work of others who took inspiration from their projects. The Japanese director is hardworking and appreciates the love and respect he gained from the gaming community and his colleagues.
The director fondly remembers his time working on Bloodborne and contributed greatly to its success. The Soulslike genre is not meant for everyone, however, that did not stop Miyazaki from making great games and carrying over mechanics to future projects.
These directors are carrying the game industry in unique ways. Fans are eager to see where they will go next. Kojima and Miyazaki are distinctly different but share the same objective. Making video games is a cut-throat business and those with the strongest wills can flourish.
